I got a late start on Saturday the Spokane drive is 5+ hours and our local DSM crew was struggling to get Carissa’s 1g running well enough to make the drive. They finally got everything sorted and we left about 5:30pm on Saturday evening

Carissa’s car made it about 50-60 miles from home and started to overheat as we started up Snoqualmie Pass. Carissa and Bryan headed back home to catch a later ride to Spokane (Have you ever seen 5 people wearing an EVO X?), we were all disappointed as Carissa’s car definitely has come together nicely over the last few months, It would have been fun to see her run it. This left me driving my truck/trailer alone for the trip.

I got to Spokane way after dark and promptly got lost trying to find the track. Wheeling my tow rig (almost 60’ of truck & trailer) around in the dark plain sucks! It is way too easy to eff yourself by turning onto the wrong road! Danged if I didn’t do just that, I managed to get myself into a Casino parking lot with no way out! Fortunately the security staff was amused enough to help me out and held traffic while I put it in 4-low and crawled my kit over a curb and back on my way. (Wish I had a video of that) I finally found the entrance to the track and parked for the night. About an hour later (midnight) the rest of the Everett DSM crew arrived! Between setting up tents and a 12pack we managed to get to sleep around 2:30.

Qualifying started at noon. My first pass the car ran well but was WAY down on power only running 10.6 @ 128. A quick look at the logs showed my boost was at 19psi - wastegate pressure! The boost controller had quit working! I went to the English Racing crew and begged for parts – they came through with a spare Hallman ES out of their parts stash (Lucas and crew are the best – Thanks Guys).
Bryan pulled some VooDoo magic out, rattled the new controller back and forth, turned the knob 6-7 turns and pronounced it set at my desired boost! :hmm: I have to learn me some of that voodoo because he managed to get the thing set perfectly at 36psi on the first try.

The next qualifying run looked MUCH better with a 10.009 @ 142. That run got me #1 qualifier in my class. The ECMLink logs showed 3.2 degrees of knock retard. I pulled 1 degree of timing out of two cells to combat the knock and was ready for the first round of eliminations.

The next three elimination rounds all belonged to me with a 9.8, a 9.7 and finally my personal best of a 9.6 all at 142mph. The earlier timing adjustment had dialed the car in perfectly with no more than .4 degrees of knock retard in any of the runs.

Only one race left and I was up against one of the fiercest competitors in the area Matt Kincaid and his COBB WRX/STI. I had lane choice going in and stuck with the right lane, Matt played a bit on the staging line but I wasn’t going to trip the 2nd light until he was fully staged, I saw him light up both lights so let my car nudge into the second light and went WOT my car came up on the converter just in time – And I watched Matt jump 2 car lengths on me! WTF I was heartbroken thinking he had the race! I was slowly reeling him in, but ran out of track before the finish. In the return lane Matt told me he had red-lit and the time slip shows a -.284 reaction time WOW - no wonder he had two car lengths on me almost 3 tenths of a second head start!

9.6 @ 142 time slip

Talk about a fun day I got to play with cars all day and hang out with a bunch of my friends. Special Thanks to Bryan for helping with the car, he is a walking encyclopedia about cars (especially DSMs) and how to make them go fast. A BIG Thank You to the ER crew for their spare boost controller! And Max for running the camcorder and providing commentary in the video clips.

Until Next Season
