Hey guys,
I just bought a 90 Talon TSi that needs an engine rebuild.
I've lived in the Tri-Cities for a long time and used S&B machine for some work on my son's car but want to know if you guys have experience with any other machine shops in town.
Particularly 4G63 head work.
Don't suggest Kaizen Speed, I talked to them a week or so ago about my daughter's Prelude and asked if they do their own machining, they don't. I know they do top notch work but I'm going to assemble the engine myself (save big $$$) but need someone to rebuild the head and bore/prep the block for me.

Nick at Kaizen said they use Pointer Machine but I can't find a phone number for them, anyone have it.

Thanks

In Spokane we have one the best head porters around. He used to work for airflow research in southern California porting and testing heads on there flow benches. He knows everything from early hemi's to Ferrari f1 heads. He has a complete head shop in house and I saw a 800 HP 4g63 head he did that really impressed me. If you want I can get his number and post it sometime next week?

That would be great but I'm really just looking for a stock rebuild.
The car will be my daily driver and backup auto-x car so it's basically going to be stock with a couple upgrades to improve reliability and add a little HP.

Here's the story on this car.
It's a 90 Talon that was owned for a long time by an older couple who recently gave it to their grandson.
It wasn't running quite right so he decided to replace the timing belt but botched the job and on the initial start bent all 8 intake valves and maybe some of the exhaust valves. He sold the car to my neighbor who intended to rebuild it but doesn't have the money right now (buying a new house) so sold it to me.
It turns out the reason it was running poorly was the exhaust manifold is badly cracked as well as the turbine housing and waste gate.

My plans are to rebuild the engine and do whatever maintenance the rest of the car needs then daily drive it.
The turbo is in pretty bad shape so will be replaced along with the exhaust manifold.
It will possibly see some auto-x use if I break my primary auto-x car (73 Datsun 240 with LT1 V8 and 5-speed tranny).

As far as the head goes, I would go with a re-man stock 6-bolt head from slowboy racing.

Slowboy Racing, Inc. :: DSM :: Engine :: Heads :: 1G :: Remanufactured Stock 6 Bolt Head

They stand behind all there work and there a good company, I havent had any problems with them. But to save money, go with russgvrs' suggestion. If you are just looking for a head I know Kaizenspeed has 2 4G63 heads avaliable at there shop, plus if your looking for some aftermarket head parts (valves, springs, ect.) Id be more than happy to sell them to you, and you can get all that at Kaizen, I have the 10.0 Talon they built and Ill be doing a new head for this upcoming race season so I have no need for my old head parts.

fst91dsm,
The SBR head is a bit more than I want to spend, although it's probably a reasonable price.

Thanks for the offer to sell me the parts but I'm looking to do a budget build and keep the engine mild so it's reliable. I'm not into drag racing, I race auto-x which doesn't benefit as much from HP as suspension mods so high HP is not really my goal. If the parts you have are basically stock and something I need I might be interested. I know I'll need new valves. I'm pretty sure the springs, retainers and rockers are good, I might upgrade to better lash adjusters, not sure yet, but I think the stock ones are fine.
As for the bottom end I'm doing a full overhaul with new 85.5mm pistons, bearings, ARP rod bolts and head studs, stock main bolts, crank and rods. The pistons I decided to use are Topline 8:1. I didn't want to spend the money on forged and heard the Topline pistons were equivalent to OEM quality. They have a little better CR than stock. I considered using 2G pistons but didn't want to hassle with having the rods machined and also wanted a little lower CR so the tune wasn't as critical.
I plan to use a MegaSquirt ECU eventually but will get the car running again with the stock unit.

If any of you guys see a glaring mistake in my plan let me know.

Oh, almost forgot. I bought the FP tax sale Evo III kit, here's what's in it.

MHI Evo 3 turbocharger
Walbro 341 fuel pump
Fuel Pump Install Kit
DSM upgrade turbo manifold
FP oil feed line
DSM Gasket Set

I completley understand wanting to keep it at a reasonable price believe me. I do know that they will have stock valves in the 2 heads they have laying around, and Im sure they will cut you a deal on those valves. They wont be doing anything with them.
