Hey guys; to start off my name is Van; I am stationed in San Francisco and I live in San Pablo.

I have been researching for the past few days, but I just am not able to diagnose my problem. My fiance bought me a 1996 Talon TSi AWD. Great Christmas present, but it was owned and abused by an apparent idiot. So far, I have had to replace the valve cover because he was running a cracked cover. I have had to replace the VC gasket and bolts as well. I have also had to redo the wiring since the moron cut the stock radio harness to instal the Dual stereo system. I have had to change the oil twice to get it to drain clear, and replace the EGR valve to try and pass smog. Next, I have to replace the shocks and springs since he put ebay coil over sleeves on the now blown stock shocks. In addition to all of that; he mounted an intercooler on the front of the car (hacked into the bumper and cut out the foglights too) that wasn't EVEN HOOKED TO ANYTHING!!! I have also seafoamed the car.

The mods on the car are light; an aftermarket BOV (atmosphere vented; I plan on switching back), Turbo-back (not sure of the brand; Muffler says XL Performance) and ebay strut bars.

After all of that work since the 23rd of December, I finally took it out for a proper test drive. At first, all seemed well. About 5 minutes into the drive, I took off from a stoplight. As the car was accellerating, it seemed as if the driver's side rear tire was spinning faster than the rest. I doubt that is the case, but that is the best way I can describe it. I put the car up on jack stands in the garage and spun each tire. There was no binding and no leaking fluid. I started the car (on jack stands) and put the car into first gear and got out to walk around. The rear tires were spinning freely, but the front drivers side was moving forward slightly (10 degrees or so) and popping back. The passenger side seemed to spin freely. I shut the car down, and had my fiance spin the front tires with me.the rears spun in tandem.

I am getting close to my wits end; I have had this car for a month now, but I can't seem to get her out of the garage. The engine and tranny seems very strong, but the drivetrain has me worried.

Any ideas on what exactly I am feeling in the drivetrain and how much this is going to cost me?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I apologize if this is a newb question, but I am not only new to DSMs, but new to AWD and turbo'd engines.

Well before jumping to conclusions first go under the car and have a look at the half shaft. Make sure it has two bolts mounting it to the back of the block at the ac compressor bracket.

To be blunt; i o not know what i am looking for, so here are some pics and a video of it running in first gear. Sorry for the large pictures; but I figured the bigger they were, the better chance I had of getting the right part.

Once again, I apologize for my lack of knowledge, I have only been a part of the DSM world for a few weeks.

You have a open front diff, so what is the right front doing when you are doing that. If it is moving as fast that the rear that is normal. I can't see anything in the pics that looks abnormal other then maybe a torn boot but I can't tell. Try wedging somthing against the right front to get the left front moving.

I am beginning to wonder if the whole problem is just due to the suspension (or lack therof). While the car is up on stands, there is no binding or anything. When the car is on the ground, it is ridiculously low. I can't even get a jack underneath. I am wondering if what I am hearing is the drivetrain operating under stresses it was not designed for.

Opinions?

yeah i think that's normal i don't know about AWDs but on front wheel drives when it is freewheeling like that one of the wheels spins faster than the other. I know a what you can tell if its open diff and LSD is if you spin the wheels in the air the open diff the wheels will spin opposite direction and and a LSD will both spin in the same direction for the front and the backs. Hope this helps some.

That does looks like there is a bunch of oil/grease around that CV boot...
