Well, I am officially ready to kill my dsm. Its getting to the point, where I would gladly pay someone who knows what they are doing with dsm's(as opposed to a general mechanic) just so the problem can be fixed.

Basically, my laser starts up fine, idles well and everything. However, after sitting for about 4-5 minutes the car will start to sputter. The idle ranges from around 730-850. If I rev it up high enough the car will die.

I can hear air leaking somewhere, but I cant trace a boost leak. :(

If one of you guys can fix the problem Ill happily pay you 100 dollars. If you cant fix it, Ill probably give you like 20 bucks for trying. I have all the necessary tools. Im just throwing it out there, just because I dont know what else to do. Thanks-
 
I was actually thinking that too when I first started it up, because I just changed out the turbo before that. But, nope, everything is plugged in fine. Plus, it had the problem before too, so its something I havent looked at yet.
 
It would be a lot easier for you to trace a boost leak when using soapy water in a spray bottle. If you see bubbles...bingo!

It would start to sputter after sitting for about 4-5 mins? When was the last time you did your full maintenance check up? Check your coil pack, transistor, Spark plug and Plug wires. When was the last time you change your fuel filter? Maybe it's clogged. How are your injectors? It may need service. I would also suggest checking your base timing and doing a compression test. A leak down test would be good idea as well.

Borrow a datalogger from a friend and do a simple scan? It might be something simple like a loose battery cable.

+1 on the soapy water... it's indispensable. I would have never been able to find all my leaks without it.
 
Ive tried the soapy water in a spray bottle, but still nothing. It has new plugs and wires.

Ive had bad coil packs before, and it wasnt like this. Ive also had bad injectors and it didnt act like this either. I could try the fuel filter but I dont think its that.

The main thing about the soapy water though, is that I dont really know where to spray. If someone wants to find a boost leak for 100 let me know.
 
spray soapy water everywhere that air is pressurized after the turbo and before the intake ports on the head... Do you run a stock smic still or do you have a fmic? If its stock, spray all your rubber hoses, if its a fmic, then spray all your couplers and flanges.
 
Heres what you need to spray:

-Both sides of the throttle body and the TB elbow
-Where your intercooler pipes(whether they be rubber or hard pipes) connect to the TB elbow, intercooler and turbo (or j pipe)
-Where your bov connects to the intercooler pipe
-ALL of your vacuum lines and where they connect. I have had to use zip ties to stop leakes from these.

And last but not least check every vacuum line for any cuts, slits or holes in them. Also make sure every one is still connected.

P.s. I may have missed a few spots to check for leaks, but you have the general idea. Its just water and soap, GO NUTS with the spray bottle!;)
 
Does it start right back up after it dies? Do you have a boost gauge? If you have a boost gauge watch your vacuum when you first start it up and if it starts to drop over a couple of mins to pretty low, your exhaust could be clogged. Or you could do a quick test and disconnect cat and run it for a while without and see if problem is fixed.
 
Have you tested the IAC? Maybe it's starting to malfunction, or possibly even the EGR needs to be checked out as well.
 
Oh I just noticed you're in Napa, I hope you haven't gone to Woody's shop, I think it was called Garaged? He sux at DSM's. Seriously. He'll make your car run worse.

I think that's the first time I've ever heard Dave badmouth anything or anyone. That shop must REALLY be bad... haha
 
Not worse than "turbo's" shop... if anyone on here knows of "turbo" the tranny dsm mechanic with orange hair speak up... because that is a funny funny person. I know Paul at NL knows that fool... hahahaa man...

haha, garaged... that fool would talk nonsense, 2.4 stroker in my fwd drag car...
 
Whatever happened to Turbo? I'm REALLY glad I didn't buy the car that s/he gave me a ride in. Turbo wouldn't even let me test drive it, and wanted $5000 for a beat ass 1990 GSX. Thumbs DOWN.

someone bought that and brought it to pauls shop and it was a total POS... missing trans bolts and so much stuff was just JANKY...

HAHAHA... YES! It had these devil girl stickers all inside. He had the knock LED mod that was blinking nonstop during the test drive because "I put in a tank of 87 just this once". Also the dipstick blew out and covered the engine compartment with oil. He said he'd do "the dipstick mod" if I put down a deposit ROFL

I saw that car in Milpitas several months ago, and on Craigslist again. Oh man. hahahahaha
 
I met Turbo once. I never encountered a tranny before, it was an unusual experience. It's like, "w'sup dude" then 'O look, boobs!" then 'oh yeah, yer a dude' WTF

Turbo shook my hand like a man, it really threw me off. It was either that or the Hooters shirt...
 
hahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa OMG... i have sooo many funny turbo stories. My friend's dad used to do all of turbo's machine work, so he'd be in the shop all the time and my friends dad would just CLOWN turbo haha. THat old redneck is soo funny. ANyways, since he did a lot of work for turbo, he hooked me and my friend up with misc parts he had around his shop (or chop shop). a logger when we needed it... aircan for smog.. you know little shit.

Now turbo liked to be called "she/her/ms/ma'am" all the likes, but turbo had a 5 o'clock shadow, a man package, a manly face and all. All that turbo had goin for him that was female was that he had boobs, high heels, and makeup. Imagine a guy with long orange hair, a 5'oclock shadow, lipstick, eye makup, boobs in a tank top, those tight black spandix (or whatever) biker pants, with a buldge (eww i just dry heaved in the middle of my description), platform high heels with painted man toenails...


One time me and my friend were horseing around in turbos shop and he yelled at us from the other side of the shop "HEY!!! quit effin around!!!" in the manliest voice possible, haha, i just found it funny that we had to address him/her SHIM with a female connotation, yet turbo acted so manly... ewww
