I have a 95 gst bone stock can i put 89 octane in just to cruise around and stay out of the boost :sneaky:

i was told no. Never!!!!! just stick with 91 or higher. i fowled out my o2 sensor running 89

:nono: :tease: i dont understand why you would want to put 89, its not like if you are going to be saving a ton of money if you do. your actually going to create more problems. just stick to 91 or higher

As long as you arent boosting, your car runs virtually the same as any other car. If you dont have any heavy mods, I would think you could as long as you stay out of the boost.

Hell Ive run 89 octane in my car once when I was literally out of gas and thats all the gas station had left. It didnt blow up on me but I did get to test my knock sensor.
Previously, I had thought it didnt work since I had never seen a single count of knock on my logger. I quickly found it still funtioned quite well. ;)

Its just a testiment to how rich these cars run from the factory.

once i ran out of gas and the only gas my friend had at his house was 87. i stayed out of the boost and it was fine.

with running 8.5:1 compression with that 7bolt (if it is stock..), true-89 is a little low... just keep it out of boost or drop a pint of octane booster in the tank..

Or go E85 since alcohol is high octane fuel anywhos ...

book says 91 or 93 or has to be unleaded 89.

black eclipse-i was told no. Never!!!!! just stick with 91 or higher. i fowled out my o2 sensor running 89

All pump gas is unleaded!! I hate when people ask me "do i put unleaded in"... Yes you put regular in or 87... Race gas is leaded and that is what kills your o2 sensor..

old people with these cars run 87 all the time.. my 90 tsi doesn't even say to put premium in on the dash like my 2g does... Im sure the old guy i bought it from never put anything over 89 in only because in my town 87 is the same price as 89...

Wow I was just reading this and is 93 the highest it goe's over there in the us? I run 99 over in the u.k and I very rarely run 97 or even 95 if 99 is all out! Do they not have shell v-power over there?

They sell 91 in california, but they have higher octane in other states. There is
a gas station down the street from me in San Diego that sells VP 100 octane at
the pump. Its 7.99 a gallon, but I bet thats still cheaper than what you pay over there!

N

I put 87 in my car once, filled it right up too. I was pissed when I realized what I had done because I was on my way to the track. I turned my MBC all the way down, but I was still getting knock a little when I would lightly tip into the throttle on the thruway. My 9:1 CR probably didn't help matters. Needless to say I skipped the race that day :(

Seriously, if 10 cents a gallon more is going to break the bank, maybe you shouldn't own a DSM. I can understand if 93 isn't available and you're forced to use crap gas. If you have the good stuff available, just pay the extra 10 cents a gallon and run it.

This is pure silliness.

The rating is different. We take ron and mon and divide by 2. That's why our rating number is lower than there. . .

. . .Your 99 octane is not like 100 octane we can get at our racetracks. . . Shell V-power is rated at 93 over here. . .

old people with these cars run 87 all the time...

Nope. This old guy uses 93 octane below 5000 ft altitude and 91 above. My 98 Talon has never tasted 87 octane. And neither did my 91 TSI.

93's all i fill up... even with my cars that dont ask for it!!

Its just better burning gas!
Whats the big deal about 10-15 cents more for a better burning fuel!
less gunk build up, more power, less emissions!!

GO 91-93 whatever you have where youre at!!

honestly you wouldent even save $ you will get worse gas mileage with 89 then 91 so whatever you did save at the pump you would lose with lower mileage

Dont do it. Calculate how much you are really only saving. Does that really sound worth risking your motor?

Plus if you own a DSM you should have a second bank account for fixing it anyways.

Our rating system is different than yours iirc. You guys get the RON number whereas we get the average of MON (lower)+RON (higher) numbers (called AKI, anti-knock index) making ours look lower.

OP, you're not going to save money by using a lower octane gas, figure 5-10 cents a gallon, that's only 50 cents with a 10 gallon tank. Only use 89 as an absolute last ditch effort and if you do use 89, drive like a little old lady and don't get on the pedal at all.
