i am looking to purchase a dsm what are the usual things i should look for to make sure the dsm is in decent condition

Test drive the shit out of it. Don't buy a 2g with over 150k without it being rebuilt by a decent mechanic. Don't buy one thats been modded a lot unless you trust the guy.

What year? Stock or modded?

First things first.

Find out when the timing belt and water pump were done! Can't stress that enough. Get receipts if necessary.

I mean really just go about it like you would buying any type of used car. Make sure it's been maintained properly, free of any frame damage (make sure the title is clean unless you don't care).

If you live in an area that uses salt on the raods during winter, and you're buying a 2g, check that bastard for rust. Strut towers, radiator support, inside the door jam by the hinges. Every inch of the car.

My car was rust free when I bought it. Just 2 winters in Utah and now my lower radiator support is breaking apart.

yep ... i bought mine at 145,000 for $6000.... MAY 2008 ...

few months later i had to fix :

water pump, belts, radiator, CAS, multiple boost leaks, the dead shocks and new paint job ..

so to the OP, find one that runs good, no odd engine noises....prepare to do alot of maintenance but it is worth in the end...

last thing, stay away from sellers who vents the BOV on a stock setup .... :nono:

I bought my car and the BOV was venting on a stock motor. Theres a nasty boost problem and I still can't figure it out.

If its a 2G AWD i would check the rear frame rails where the Trailing arms connect to see how rusty/rotten they are
