I’ll just apologize now for the long post.

Here is my issue…

I have a 97 Mitsubishi Eclipse GST spyder, automatic which has a 96 auto trans in it. I completed a AWD conversion and the AWD transmission that I got was a 96. The trans had the stamp of W4A33K1UPQ2 CV5168 on it. (I kept the car automatic because the donor car I got was auto and free) It was missing the speed gear and sleeve so I check online and saw that I could use the speed gear and sleeve from the other trans. I had the transmission built by a local guy, which included new torque converter, clutches, seals, solenoids and a rebuilt valve body. I drove the car for almost 200 miles before the speedometer in the car quit working one night when I was out tuning it. (I’m running DSM link)

Here is where all the fun begins. I pulled over to check the connection and it was fine. After a few days of searching on the internet I did a volt meter test on the plug which had power. I also changed the gauge cluster out. Still nothing. So I decided to buy a new speed gear and sleeve from Mitsu since I also had to replace the pan. The one I pulled out looked like the center of the wheel had been chewed up like an apple core.

This pic isnt that good, but it is chewed up good.

Don’t ask me why or how this happened but I sat the new speed gear and sleeve in the hole on the trans to start the car up and make sure the fluid was good after I replaced the pan. (the car is on the lift) I decided to give it a little gas and sure enough the speedometer started working. So we bolted everything back up put the car on the ground and got nothing. She stopped working again.

I called it quits and decided to go home and do more research, so after looking up trans model numbers and comparing part numbers I decided to order the speed gear and sleeve that came on the 97-99 transmissions.

While searching the internet I saw a lot of people talking about limp mode and staying in 3rd gear well that is not my case. The car shifts through all the gear and pull just as hard when the speedometer was working. So I’m clueless about that.

Now I hold in my hand a speed gear and sleeve for the 95-96 transmissions and the 97-99 transmissions. (Part numbers 95-96 sleeve MD756606 gear MD757055 97-99 sleeve MD760149 gear MD760150) Knowing that I can’t possibly hurt anything I try the other gear and sleeve. I still get nothing. I then decided to trade the gears to the other sleeves. For some reason the 95-96 gear in the 97-99 sleeve worked the best but I could tell it still wasn’t reading 100% right but it was moving.

Someone told me it could be a problem with the TCU.
Are the TCUs different in the FWD and AWD?
If so dose anyone have an extra AWD tcu?
Does anyone have a wiring harness diagram for switching the FWD tcu and AWD tcu if need be?

Someone also told me to shim the gear inside the transmission that meets up with the speed gear that drops in. Isn’t that gear part of the case and cannot be shimmed?

I’m looking for any help with this matter and I’d really like to not have to drop the transmission if need be.

If anyone has any questions let me know and thanks for any and all your help.

Nobody has any information on this issue? damn good luck justin
