Its been snowin' alot and I have a hole in my exhaust pipe now. I was wondering if that could cause my turbo to make a whining sound instead of the High pitch noise when spooling up... I can only hear it when I'm getting on it from half throttle to full. Any imput would be nice. It all caught me off guard. I also doesn't pull as hard as normal(exhaust leak?)
Thanks for the time

Damn that's a fast reply... I was actually waiting for my engine to cool off so I could check for play... I just wanted to see other people diagnosis. The leak just happened last night i'm guessing...

Hmm, I just re-read everything, if the car's not pulling as hard, I wouldn't suspect an exhaust leak (Unless it's a pre-turbo leak, like in the manifold, or the wastegate is leaking).

Pull off the turbo intake accordion tube, and take a good look for any debris inside of it. Make sure that rubber sleeve is still in the accordion, or around the neck of the turbo. That has been known to get in the way and cause problems, or even be sucked into the turbine.

Visually inspect the turbine as best as you can (totally remove the intake tube thingy if it makes it easier) to see if there's any damage.

There shouldn't be any in-out play on the shaft, but a little side-side-up-down is normal.

I'm doin' that as we speak.. the intake is off right now but i've been drivin' alot today and its hot as hell... I took off my intake and decided that she needed to cool off first. I know of one small crack in my manifold but I know I have a leak in the cat back section of my exhaust.
I've just never known a turbo to have a mechanical whine to it. I figured the leak was causing my boost to rise and the added boost made the turbo make thoses noises but I'm just worried about it not pulling like it used to. KNowing my luck my turbo's crappin' out on me:knock on wood:

Alright, I just inspected it and it turns out one of the fins is slightly bent and has a piece missing off the edge the size of the tip of a ballpoint pen. but I didn't feel any play what so ever but at least we know now. Its not that bent though, is that still gonna cause it not to pull that hard?
I couldn't feel any play so how would it of gotten bent. The intake isn't falling apart(I checked) Anyway jsut thought i'd keep you informed.

Yeah, unfortunately that's all it takes to make a turbo unhappy :) It should be "okay" to use, but you don't want any metal shavings if it's scraping getting in your engine/intake tract. It's probably not going to last much longer being out of balance like that.

But, with a 92, it was probably getting on in it's lifespan anyway. As for what could've caused that, if something fell past your filter somehow, that definitely would.

What I would do is pick up a 16G new somewhere. They can be had for less than $500 dollars, and are a direct replacement for the 14b and can be put on a 100% stock car without any modifications.

That's exactly what happened to me. I bought an SBR (they were good for me) 16G after my 14b seized on the highway. I installed it myself in one lazy weekend's work. Make sure to prime the turbo with oil if you do that (remove the MPI fuse, and crank it over a few times). Personally, I also changed the oil and did a coolant flush at the same time.

Thanks for the help... I felt like knoob askin' all the questions but I just wanted to see if other people would of concurred with what I came up with. thanks again.

You're welcome for the help. It's good to respond to someone who seems intelligent, and isn't afraid to actually look inside the engine bay :)

I'm still a noob :) I just happen to have had a real similar problem. Nobody minds beginner questions if you ask them like you did, and not all "DOOD, MY CAR IS BROKEN HELP!!!!!111oneone"

Glad to be of help
