hey i read that a person made a custom pvc intake pipe. wouldnt that melt?? or somthing like that?

Nope the intake is just sucking in fresh air that is the tempature of outside. Now a pvc downpipe/exhaust would be a different story!!!!!!

I wouldn't see why not. IC pipes are on the cool side of the turbo. As a matter of fact Stock 2g UICP are made of PVC. So go ahead it wouldn't be a problem at all.

Ok, my current DSM is a pice of junk, although it has yet to brake down which realy suprise's me but will soon be turned into a parts car hopefully in 2-3months as I will have a new DSM with half the miles thats 100% bone stock.

Now what I was wondering is would PVC pipe found at hardware stores work as intake pipeing as a temporary thing? I dont have much money at the moment and wont untill around the time I have the 2nd DSM soooo since im bord to death around here and want some more outa this old heap before it's retired I was wondering if it will work well and where it wont.

I know it would work for the UICP but I was mainly concerned about the LICP, I would think the air from the compressor to the SMIC is quite hot. Would I have any problems with it melting? And I dont expect to have any probelsm with it poping off since Im going to glue it togeather and then drill & tap 4 holes in each connection and add a nice little bolt.

Also what about the elbo where the stock 1g BOV sits.. What would I do about that? I dont think you could make any kind of flange for a PVC pipe so I duno on that one.

I figure some black semi flat krylon and hey theres my ghetto beater.

Please discuse.

*edit* I want to come up with a way to run 2.5" LICP and UICP and then maybe make an intake from the MAF to the turbo out 3" to a neckdown to the turbo??? will this work or will I have melting plastic all in my engine bay?

Don't do it, they are not meant for that kind of heat.
They release corrosive gas at higher temperature.

People use it for the intake pipe and that's marginally acceptable, but IC pipe is definitely not a good idea.

If you search around online, you can find tons of places that sell aluminized tubing in various sizes, thickness, grades, and bends. I would suggest either using aluminized tubing with the bends you need, or just get a long straight piece to cut up and then use the silicone couplers for bends.
Just do a search for mandrel bends or mandrel bent tubing etc...

I have been using pvc since spring, i used to have 2" but I just changed it to 2.5". it is pvc that i got from a plumbing supply. it cost me about 50 for the pipe all the elbows glue and rubber connectors. you iwll run yourself broke if you use silicone. 90 deg bends are like 35 dollars ea. I have a frank 19c and and a o2 elim with external dump and it dumps right next to the pvc so I wrapped the pipe with exhaust wrap and no problems. I made the pipes run real short by cutting the j pipe and welding it to face the drivers side and I removed the ac fan. and then I had it exit the passanger side of the fmic and go straight up to the intake inifold. It it GREAT. I only have a Saab 9-5 intrecooler that is nice and big that I got from a ajunkyard and it all does a great job. I felt a TREMENDOUS gain when i first did all this. I had a t25 and 2" pvc that went the long way, like the big greddy kit and I drove from connecticut all the way to maryland and I was going real fast the whole way and I never had any problems with the pipe getting to hot and melting. I was even able to beat a 3000gt vr-4 and a lt1 firebird formula with this setup while going to maryland. So you can listen to thier remarks that are unsubstantiated, or you can listen to me someone who is currently doing it.See ya

I am kinda thinking it will work also because I have burned alot of scrap small PVC pipeing and yea theres that white smoke but as toxic as clorine is I should be dead by the amount I have breathed if it's THAT much.

Besides this is going to be put on my daily beater since I am soon geting a much nicer 90 AWD TSI :D So I dont want to spend much money on this thing..

My main concern was the LICP.. Also on the UICP how do you attach the BOV???

I may try ABS pipeing for the LICP.. The upper IC pipe shouldn't get that hot anyway should it? like maybe 120*F at the most I would think???

Good post pics.

Did you do the turbo intake or the UICP???

Also it would be used with a 14b not that hair dryer (T-25) so I would think then somewhere around 185-200*F ? That is kinda hot though, damn I didn't know the engine was takeing in air THAT hot..

Seriously makes me want a huge FMIC..

Just to let you guys know, ABS is pretty heat resistant. People have been using ABS and PVC for potato guns forever. My potato gun uses ABS, and for a propellant, we use MAPP gas mixed with pure oxygen.

It's not a sustained amount of heat over time, but the flame is hot enough that you can feel the heat from the muzzle flash on your face. It's gotta be around the order of 800-1000*F inside the chamber (for a split second.) MAPP gas burns HOT.

If you are willing to stop at 2" I am using 2" Copper from the home improvment store in my 90 Talon. I know it will hold pressure and temp with no ill effects. Bends are limited as with the ABS or PVC but this stuff will never melt. (unless the engine bay is on fire) :thumb:

I had pvc intercooler pipe on my last car and the pipe out of the turbo turned brown and started cooking as it passed the manifold. And that was on a T-2 turbo!

The Exhaust manifold get EXTREMELY hot. Running a plastic pipe in front of it is a REALLY bad idea, unless you wrap the portion of the pipe that runs near the exhaust manifold in some form of insulation.

Anywhere else the PVC/ABS pipe should work great.

are these pvc pipes ok of my uicp, that one stupid section thats crimpted.
