i just recently bought my 91 AWD Talon, it is my first DSM, and it wont start , when i go to turn the key, all i hear is a clicking noise coming from the engine, the battery is fine, the stereo, windows and lights work fine, my friend will be coming by tomorow or sometime this week to do a compression test on the engine and to datalog it as well, just wondering what the hell is going on, i'm quite sure its the engine.

Thanks

hey thanks man, yeah i'm starting to think that also, my friends said that, and they also said the timing belt might be gone as well.

thanks

I imagine that you drove the car before you bought it. So the timing belt was not broken then. In my experience, when the timing belt goes, it will go WHILE you are driving, not in the garage just sitting there. But that's just the 2 timing belts I have broken in my life. :D I would go with the ignition relay, but of course I'm not there to actually pop the hood.

click-click-click-click usually=starter/starter relay or some ign. relay...

when i go to turn the key, its not a click-click all the way while the key is turned, its more of like on big click and thats it...i think the engine doesnt want to turn over

thanks

i bought a 91 Eclipse GST last weekend with the same exact problem. I thought it was the starter too but actually the engine was seized up and was damaged pretty bad. But hopefully yours just needs a new starter.

Bang the starter with a hammer while you have the key turned to start and see if the engine turns. DONT DAMAGE THE STARTER! You might want to use a dead blow hammer, but that might not hav enough force to work. Also, make sure the starter is still bolted on and that it is tightened up. I have worked on cars that wouldnt started and sounded like a dead starter and got up under the car and the starter was just hanging by the wires. The bolts can easily slip loose by the engine vibration. If one or 2 bolts wiggled out the starter can slip to the side and wedge the fly wheel, so make sure its tight and staright. I hope this helps any.

I think that the engine is seized up as well, my friend and i took off the valve cover and looked underneath and there was shit loose, i think they were the rocker arms, they were underneath the camshafts, i took pictures, i 'll post them to see if you guys can get a better idea of what i'm talking about, and i have a buddy that has 2 or 3 built talons and he is helping me out..... and he says the engine might be gone...but hey i picked this up for 700 bucks, with 2 or 2.5k spent and i'll have a nice practically nice car with a new engine so its all good

Thanks guys for your help

yeah thats exactly like mine. I took off the valve cover and saw some of the rocker arms completely off and laying in there. The head was damaged so were 2 of the pistons.

here is a scan of two of the valves, you can see the damage that the piston did to them. If you cant find an engine in your price range then a rebuild may be the best way to go. good luck :thumb:
