Problem:
EGT's read high all the time after driving car for a few minutes. (1997 Eclipse Spyder GST, engine is mostly stock, K&N intake, cut dump tube, removed boost restirctor, rewired stock Fuel Pump)

Idle: Anywhere from 900 to 1200 F, 1200 after driving on beltline.
Cruise: Anywhere from 1450 to 1600
Full throttle: Generally stays under 1600, but just barely.

Logs can be found at http://www.coronium.com/CarLogs, and a quick analysis is below. Could timing have something to do with it?

1stTo2ndGearPull:
1st Gear:
RPM Pull from 1850 to 3800
Timing steadily increases from 16 to 27
At 3800 to 5500, timing dips to 19
From 5500 to 6200, timing increases from 19 to 34.
2nd Gear:
RPM Pull from 4060 to 6640 yields a fairly steady timing curve of 13 to 32

4thGearCruise:
RPM fairy steady from 1800 to 2100 back to 1700.
Timing fairly steady from 27 to 29, except some dips from 8 to 16 during deceleration.
Speed only varied by a few MPH

Slow2ndGearTo1stGear:
I beleive this was around some turns.
Timing seems consistent in this log.

O2's generally look OK throughout, if anything I could be running a little rich. Though does it look slow to respond in the 4th Gear Cruise? Any help is greatly apreciated. I just put in fresh plugs, so I know that's not the problem. I've also done a compression test. Cylinder 3 is low (150), but not at the service limit, so I don't see that being an issue either.

Thanks,
Ben

Im not an expert by any means, but I just bought a 96 Talon TSI AWD, my EGTs are almost exactly the same as yours, and Im almost sure that my timing is fine as engine was redone and all last year. It seemed to me that my temps were way too high, and I went and talked to a DSM guy in town. He said that because my egt gauge was tapped pre-turbo, my temps were OK. By the way, how long have your temps been like this and how often should your timing be checked??? Hope I helped a little.

Since I got the probe on. Where have you tapped your probe and what brand guage/probe are you using? I'm tapped on cyl. 2 about 2 inches from the head. Using a Team Rip probe with a Westach guage.

Oh yea, forgot. My engine has also been rebuilt recently (January, just before I bought it). But to me that doesn't mean anything, because I'm 30psi low in cyl 3. Who knows what else they rushed.

I think your temps are about right. I have a GReddy egt with the GReddy probe tapped in cylinder #1. At idle I'm seeing around 500C. Part throttle (cruising) 70 to 80mph I'm at 700 to 800C. WOT top of third I'm at 850 to 875C. That's with a ported FP Big28 running 21psi.

Yea speedy, your temps seem pretty similar to mine. After cruising for a while (say, 10-15 minutes), what does your EGT read at idle? Still 500C or higher?
Yeah... right at 500C or a tad higher, but usually about 500C.

I think that should be about right. Generaly i think your supose to put the probe on the #1 cyl.and about 4" to 6" away from the head. Mine is in the mid part of the bend, about 1 1/2" before it meets #2 runner.
My gauge reads about 100 deg. less than yours.

Well, I think the probe is getting heat soaked from being so close. I noticed if I sat for a long time at idle after highway driving, EGT's SLOWLY dropped from 1200F to 1000F. I then removed the manifold heat shield. EGTs after a highway run now dropped at a much faster rate.

The only thing that has me worried now is in conversing with people I was told that the factory ECU should never advance timing more than 24. Just before I let off the gas mine goes to 32-34. He seems to think my ECU is messed up b/c of this. Does anyone elses car go over 24?
