Anybody know how to read the Codes ?

My check engine light came on a couple times over the past month or two. It happened when I really opened her up and went off a few minutes later. Now the check engine light is on all the time. Car runs great, fuel mileage is fine. The light just stays on. How do I read the codes ? Any ideas what it might be ? Also on another matter. Do 2.0 's normally sound like they have a slight knock around 3 to 5000 rpm's ? I really don't think it's the rods. The sound kind of scares me a little bit though.
 
Not actually. A '92 is an non-OBD II car. You can read the codes with a analog multimeter or a simple piezo buzzer you can buy at Radio Shack. I forget the exact pins on the diag connector (I think pin 1 and 12 with 12 being ground) then you count the pulses to get the code. I have a LED (with resister) installed in the dash that's connected to the diag port all the time.

What a great resource, evryone should check out that main website. BTW if my lifters are causing the phantom knock, what can I do to eliminate it ? Also, do you have to remove the tranny to replace the sychronizers ?
 
You can clean the lifters but the problem will come back. Replacing them with the latest version seems to solve the problem but then it's too soon to be sure.
I think the tranny has to come all the way apart to replace the synchros.
