Is there a performance battery?

Just finished building my motor top to bottom and my wallie mart battery is a dud. I've heard dsms running optima red top or yellow top batteries and i see they run about 200$

now is there such thing as a performance battery? and if there is what is recommended. OR all batteries about the same and should i just go back to wallie mart and get a generic battery with the right specs.

I plan on putting my turbo back on in the summer so if i can get a better battery now than having to get on later is a plus. like i said all forged internals, and my goal is a 400hp DD

Deep cycle batteries, like the Optima Yellow, provide a much more steady current flow over time compared to "starter" batteries, which are designed to give short, high bursts of current to start the car.

Once the engine starts, the alternator provides all the power, so a car battery may go through its entire life without ever being drained more than more than 15-20 percent of its total capacity.

A deep cycle battery can provide a surge when needed, but nothing like the surge a car battery can. A deep cycle battery is also designed to be deeply discharged over and over again (something that would ruin a car battery very quickly). To accomplish this, a deep cycle battery uses thicker plates.

In other words, Starter batteries (Walmart, autozone, Optima Redtops, etc.) provide high CCA but a low reserve capacity. They aren't designed to be discharged in other words. Deep cycle batteries ( Yellowtop, Bluetop, Duralast deep cycle, etc.) typically have 1/2 the CCA for the same size battery, but a MUCH larger reserve capacity. Yellowtops tend to be larger batteries to increase the CCA to something more acceptable.

Those yellow & red tops are considered performance batteries I thought. Odessey & etc.

I personally run a Honda Del Sol battery with matching or better cca. Its half size & weighs around 17 lbs.

Another option is a small light weight battery like the Oddessy PC680.
It would not be a good choice if you have a stereo though.

LOL i do, two 12s with 500 or 600w forgot, and a aftermarket stereo.

so i get the concept of deep cycle batteries but is the gain an efficient one? it sounds like they will wear out a hell of a lot quicker than starter batteries. and explain when i will need a higher reserve that a starter battery can already provide?

I think you have it a bit backwards. The deep cycle will last LONGER than the starter batteries.

A starter battery does not provide much reserve at all, just like a normal oem economy car battery. Since you have more-demanding-than-oem accessories, you will need a more-than-oem-performing battery.

You will need a higher reserve when your car is pulling more power while not starting, especially if that power is being pulled for a long time. Or if you have aftermarket stuff like radios, gauges alarm, etc... that draw current when the car is off. A regular battery will throw the towel in way quicker than a Deep Cycle.

If that 600w is RMS and not peak... then your system is drawing 42 amps while turned up. most DSM alternators are less than 130Amps, I think 1g are even like 80 or so. You also have AC, fans, and all the other electrical stuff on your car to add on top of that.

You really don't need an upgraded battery until about 1000W system, and even then, An upgraded alternator and wiring is better. Batteries are a replacement item anyway. Replace about every 5 years on average.

I personally went with an AGM autozone platinum battery. Optima's are overrated. They are not an end-all battery, they do still die if abused. 1000w RMS system BTW, battery in trunk.

perfect all i needed to know, im looking at the Duralast 86-DLG, is this a good choice?

Go to batteries plus. Theirs has 690cca. I got one myself because its as close as I could come to the best battery without going to to a different group size. Its SLI86M with a Duracell PROCELL label. 3yr warantee for like $110.00
