I am not yet a dsm owner but wanting to trade my reliable itr swapped civic for a gst...This 97 GST has a 6 bolt swap with 255 fuel pump bigger injectors (not sure size), fmic with hard pipes, turbo intake hard pipe, 20g turbo, safc, profec b. The guy says its on 5 psi conservative tune, said breaking in clutch but idk. he also said it needed retune cause weather change said it acts funny?I asked about smoke and he says a lil smoke from turbo? Looks clean under hood accept for the vented bov that i hear is bad and also noticed a small filter where i believe is for venting the vc. Any input or advice is appreciated as i will maybe trade this saturday. He is supposed to post a video on youtube for me later and i will post link. I am mechanically inclined but mostly Honda, i am ready to learn boost!!

To clarify, my question is does this seem legit? I searched and i believe stock is like 9psi? I searched for something similar first but found boost leak to be the case of people only being able to get like 5psi of boost. He says tuned by mainstream in GA.

there is no stock boost for a 20g on a dsm since it is not the stock turbo. The car you are describing sounds pretty sketchy. If you sell your car and buy one you should be able to find something nicer and that you like.

I would find more information have him do a boost leak test, turbo could be bad, you never know get a good price then go from there once you get it home and start seeing what it needs.

Thanks for the info given, I am waiting on his video to see how it runs. I am not really buying but trading my 99 civic si with itr swap, he is asking 4k for the eclipse. If it is just turbo smoke a friend of mine has a good 16g he will sell me. Is there a way of telling the difference between turbo and engine smoke? I appreciate all advice, I'll ask about BLT but doing business over the phone he could say no leaks and he assured me that it runs good with no leaks. Here is a few pics

You can't generate less boost than the wastegate actuator will allow...and speak in words, please.
he also said it needed retune cause weather change said it acts funny?
Then it's either tuned so badly that it shouldn't be driven, or the guy doesn't know what he's talking about. Our MAS sensors conveniently work in conjunction with the ECU to take factors like temperature and barometric pressure into consideration.

The smoke seems like a bad turbo, that's definitely not an MHI.

I'm not sure the brand of turbo he has installed. The turbo that I can get from a friend is 16g

Thanks for all of the comments and suggestions and please send more because I need the input, this isn't my only choice of dsm's I could trade for, just figured it already has 6 bolt swap, electronics , and fmic ect. that I won't have to pay extra for just don't want problems early down the rd.

Running a 20g on a safc and doesn't know his injector size? Really? Smoke could be many things it would be helpful to know the color and how / when it happens? Running 5psi on a hahn turbo doesn't seem to bad, they are sold with the option of a 5psi wg.

Is he willing to let you do a compression or leak down test?

I wouldn't rush into this car just because it has upgrades, they may cost you dearly in the future.

^^^ This ^^^ and one more question....Why does he want to trade it so bad? I'm not slamming your ride in any way shape or form bro but it's a down grade to most DSM guys to go from a boosted car to an N/A car this side of a vette.....and many wouldn't give 2 shits if it was a vette they'd still consider it a down grade......That car needs to be looked at closely so you don't get burned man.....because it may look all peaches and cream from the pics but nothing in those pics can tell you if it has burned pistons or valves or maybe broken ring lands or what ever any issues could cause smoke other than a turbo. A lot of 6 bolt swaps I've seen done into 2G cars are rarely done with the up-most attention to detail which is what 1/2 the threads on this forum will always have questions about with this or that not working right. My suggestion is get a magnifying glass and scrutinize the hell out of that car before you trade cause once it's done it's done...and I'm a little leary of someone so willing to swap out of a car like that so easily. I liken it to swapping a 911 turbo out for an M3....both are nice cars....but I can assure you the boosted one will leave you with a much larger smile on your face.........

Just sayin'.....

Will-

:notgood:Seems like your trading you reliable Civic for a ticking time bomb. Take everyone's advice above and just pass on the trade. The owner doesn't know anything about the setup he is running which to us DSM'ers is a dead giveaway that something is wrong. In the end, we are just trying to save you from a headache - as these cars easily become money pits when you purchase the wrong one or don't put in reliable parts.

Again I appreciate all advice. I was saying I don't know what size injectors, he told me but I forgot. Second my motor alone cost 4k and my chassis is a rare one, I run 14.6 in the 1/4 on bad street tires, my car is wellll worth a DSM. I am not trying to be cocky but I've got many of DSM offers for my car because people that are car enthusiasts in general appreciate all nice cars. I've beaten dsm's before. This guy has also told me he wants something different which is understandable because I am doing the same, looking for something different. I am not thrashing at anyone and again I appreciate all your input and advice.

Adding to above, I live in Alabama and he lives in Georgia so doing compression and leak down test would require me making the long trip anyway. This gst has supposedly 75k on the 6 bolt swap. There is another 98 gst that a different guy wants to trade that is almost completely stock with 114k on it in Georgia not far from the other gst that I am inquiring about.

Just got the video link, tell me what you guys think about it.

Meh, swerve..........and for the record 70psi at idle is stupid high....not what I'd consider where the fuel pressure "should be"..... I've seen far worse, but the video still doesn't tell you what you need to know about the car. A test drive, a buyers check, and a complete mod list still will only tell you so much. I'm personally weary of previously modded cars and unless you have the money time and skills to throw caution to the wind I don't recommend it. In short You need to check that thing from top to bottom cause stickers are seemingly a huge selling point for the trade he's trying to work with you and unfortunately the car won't run on decals alone........Just remember that very few cars are modified in such a way that they will be as reliable as they would be left stock......modifying a car properly will still shorten it life expectancy beyond a point. if you do this trade make sure you know exactly what you're getting into so you won't regret it later- Good luck with it brotha!

Thanks blackout and I LOL'd a little. Thanks so much for the input, the car looks good but I could hear stumbling in the idle accompanied by a whining noise throughout the whole video and when he revved throttle response was sluggish and it stumbled pretty hard after the last rev prob due to vented bov and various other sensor problems. I think I will hold out to sell cause I found a low mileage near stock gsx for 4k that would give me money left over. Thanks for all the suggestions and I'm still shooting for a DSM and hopefully pick the right one

70psi Fuel pressure at idle? LOL id like to see his idc at WOT... hell i'd just like to know what injectors he is running period.

You know why its only on 5psi? Because he is probably maxing out his fp with anything more. Bump the pressure down to 42psi (get him off the stock injectors because im willing to be he is on the stock injectors, the reason for running base 70psi) and i bet you would be able to run 10 - 15psi (with upgraded injectors, 720's or something).

That grenade sticker looks like its on there for a reason.... Something the next owner will soon find out.

Honestly, the car looks good ascetically from the outside, but that's all that can be said about it. It looks obvious that the current owner doesn't know much about his car, and that's going to be the downfall of you.

Also if you outran a DSM in your civic, it was probably against a completely stock fwd. No offense, but I will have to agree with everyone else, once you go forced induction, its extremely hard to go back to all motor. Whomever the sell of that dsm is, once he gets rid of it he will want another one very shortly, maybe he just needs to learn that lesson.

You have been very informative about the car, thanks for the help. You should watch my track video beating newer wrx hatch on YouTube and the thing is I only ran 14.8 on that pass. I want a DSM pretty bad for the potential of it, but I have looked at time slips on here of gsx with 16g turbo intercooler at 15psi and other mods and the time was 14.5, that's a tenth faster than my Honda. I have time slips and video to back up my car, you should see it, its full interior and luxeries and completely rice free. I have raced a few dsms , some faster than others but I still like them because with a little research and hard work and time I could build a beast with all their potential! I would love to learn a new car especially turbo equipped! Please don't think I'm being rude because I really do like all imports I would just like to think that even a Honda can be seen as respectable especially after the hard work and careful attention I put into it. Search b16jareds on YouTube if you would like to see it.

No idea whos slip you saw, the t25 has easily done 13s and thats a wimp of a turbo even when compared to the 16g. Honestly, just because you have beat some turboed cars doesn't make the car faster then them. It's pretty obvious that most of the cars you mentioned being beat by you were either really bad drivers, or messed up cars.

Oh okay, I didn't know Hahn was associated with MHI.

They take an MHI turbo, maybe switch up the turbine housings, slap their name on it, and sell it for 2x as much.

On topic, ,<---- that 1/4 mile time was a 16g at 20psi, but with a junk tune on 91 pump, complete noob driver, corrected altitude of over 8,000ft, and tires so bad they literally fell apart 1k miles later. After some practice, better tires/suspension and much better tune on E85, I've shaved nearly 2 seconds off my ET. There's quite a few DSM's with a 16g in the 12's, 11's, and even 10's. I've yet to see an NA Honda break 15's at this altitude.

Not trying to start a DSM vs Honda thread, just trying to point out that a DSM in good condition, with mild-moderate mods, and decent tune should have no trouble against 99% of NA 4-bangers. A 20g at 5psi with 70psi fuel pressure is the prime example of a crap build with a crap tune that is probably horrifically slow.

Wow, I see y'all really dislike Honda. Looks like I'll be selling my car soon and now have 2 gsx's in sight and one being a 99 which I've read have low crank walk chances. I just hope when I get one my head doesn't swell too bad;)! Thanks for all the help and suggestions and when I finally do get my DSM I am glad that there is so much knowledge on here to help me along the process.

Well to the OP's credit, they could be at high altitude. If they are up there in the mountains then they would run (im guessing) somewhere between .6-1 second slower on their times which would make sense.

OP, how far above sea level are you? I see your from Selma which (after looking it up) is only 125ft above sea level, im not sure that would be enough to justify my theory on the time differences.

In any case jared, any car can be a nice car if built properly with 0 (or at least little questionable) rice added to it. I don't believe that people here hate Honda, I believe they simply dislike its platform. Even the gst eclipses feel the flames here on the forums. AWD/Turbo/solid motor is something that seems to be a proven, "sworn by" platform. If you've ever had to take two similar products and weigh the pros/cons of the two, then comparing Honda vs DSM for performance, modability, cost per mod, yadda.... yadda... the DSM would win. If you don't believe that then you can try writing all of the pros and cons of both vehicles (in the subject that you most care about) and see which one ends up with the most pro's.

You can find a better one. 5psi on a tune for a break in clutch as he said makes me ROFL He could be having a misfire and lowered the boost; just saying. Pass.
