Ok guys, I really need help on this one. I have a 90 talon tsi AWD (stock). Last week i was on a two and a half hour trip and blew the turbo. Oil sprayed everywhere and the manifold caught on fire along with the right side of the engine. It did very minimal damage and only burned up some vacume tubes from the bottom of the water neck to the throttle body. I Put a new turbo on, fixed the vaccume lines, put oil in her and the car runs like crap. I did just put a new clutch in it befor all of that happen. I should mention that i need to swap over 92 and up linkage so the car has first gear. But when i start out its like im starting in fith. The car has no power. When i put her in reverse though it moves fine? The car moved fine befor the old turbo blew. Pleas help.

It sounds like you have a lot going on, are you positive thats all that was damaged in the fire? So the car runs and turns over but just runs rough? If this is the case, whens the last time any maintenance was done on the car? Like fuel filter, timing belt oil change, spark plugs and wires etc... When the last time the car was boost leak tested? There could be a ton of issues with your car the way your describing things. help us help you:thumb:

Ok so, I did a compression test and needless to say it failed. Here are the numbers, 4) 100PSI, 3) 0PSI, 2) 75PSI, 1) 80PSI, and before i did that i adjusted the timing. I tried the oil on the piston trick and there was no difference.. Timing was advanced to like 13 degrees BTDC, so I set it back to 3 degrees btdc. (factory setting is 3 to 7btdc. And to answer your questions, just had a tune up before I went on that trip and blew the turbo. New plugs, and wires, fuel filter, and air filter. Also when I just pulled the spark plugs out a couple of them had broken off electrodes???

are you missing any fins in your turbo ?? how bad did it blow you could have passed metal down the line  that would explain the no compression and broken plugs hope it isnt the case

No, the fins on the old turbo are actually in pretty good condition. The was smoke from burning oil coming out of the oil fill hole. I'm going to take off the head and look at the valve condition. I'v got a new head gasket and studs. Ill keep you all posted...

I would do a leak down test before I slapped a new HG on it. I suspect you may have bent some valves with the timing advanced that far. Also, you may want to take a good look at the top of your pistons to make sure those electrodes aren't embedded or rolling around in the cylinders.

Well, got the head off and found the problem. The #3 piston is destroyed. Looks like its time to start the build!

Looks like it got a little hot in there- maybe a little pre-ignition- it looks like it was lean by the color of the piston crown, maybe with timing a bit aggressive or the fuel wasn't quite as good as the pump said it was-
Either way that slug isn't happy.....oil contamination can cause the exact same effect by injecting a serious heaping of heat into the combustion chamber and that in turn raises combustion chamber and piston crown temps....if you look closely you can actually see the line from a lean condition on the crown from about 9-2 .......and of course the melted corner from 4-6. Man that sucks- I see a wallet getting a little lighter in your near future.......... Any big plans?

The weird thing is is that is the only piston that looks like that. The other's are pretty clean. Good looking infact. But im going to do a full build on her. Get thoughs cylinders bored out, and forged pistons and rods. Looking to do a little top end work as well. Im gunna upgrade the valves, mostly because I have a suspision that they are bent. Also going to do valve springs, and new lifters. I'm going to wait on the cams untill i get a bigger turbo and intake mannifold. Also thinking about doing a 7 bolt swap, but I dont know much about that? Are they bennificial in any way?
