Vibration under acceleration, but only while accelerating...

So I just purcahsed a 95 talon awd turbo. 95% of the car is stock, the battery was replaced, and the exhaust is way too shiny to be stock. Car starts right up and no idle surge! Thank God!

The only issue with the car is that while accelerating theres a vibration, a pretty decent vibration at that. But if you let off the throttle it disappears instantly...

So based on that, im having a hard time thinking that it could be cv joints or a front end problem for that matter. It seems to me that this would have to be an engine or trans problem, No?

A friend also suggested that the diff. might have gone out or the rear axles and the load is just enough to create a vibration.

Any one have some insight they could drop on me? Thanks guys

I think it's the inner CV joints. Look for a little divot worn into the inside of the cups, where the rollers make contact.

First, Awesome video! If you could send me the youtube info to that video, that would be great because I'd like to watch the rest of the series.

Second, I just cant remember for the life of me if it made that noise, I had the windows down, and dont remember for certain. Ill have to drive it tomorrow and check it out.

The person i purchased it from said that It recently had the trans replaced, and motor was fairly new. He only had paper work for the trans. And I remember reading a thread a while back talking about transmitions going out and people only replacing the trans, not fixing the true problem.

So tomorrow thats gonna be looked at, any other ideas on what I should look for?

Its more than likely the drive shaft or an axle. I'd put money on one of the drive shaft carrier bearings.

this could be a number of issues.. hopefully the car wasnt a salvage title we wont go there. Im thinking the dif and driveshaft carrier bearings that were stated are most likely the issue, but you say it feels like its in the front so... Make sure your tranny is properly filled with oil since its new and same with transfer case. check all engine mounts too, and suspension is the easiest to see if there is an issue so check that first. gl

do you feel the vibration in the steering wheel or in your seat more? tires balanced? take note of rpm and speed when it occurs. a shop maybe able to get it to do it on a hoist. maybe rear driveshaft needs balanced?

Still not exactly sure on the issue, I changed plugs and oil, just for regualar maintence. Plugs didnt seem to make any difference.

So while driving, it seems that the vibration comes from the steering wheel but also (to a lesser extrent) the seat as well. But what I'v really noticed is that the vibration seems to go away when your above 3K RPM's. And it seems to vibrate most severly when driving in 4th gear under 3k rpm.

I forgot to check the CV joints when i changed the oil, ill have to jack it up and check again.

IS there a way to check for a bad read dif, or bad carrier bearings??

Also clean title, with only a small dent on the rear right of the car. And of course classic mitsubishi paint faint! Haha.

Just go under the car and check for excessive play in the carriers. There will be some. Driveshaft should be sitting near center of them as well. Look for damage/cracks. Quick was for diff just drain the fluid look for shaving or chunks of metal. Sounds alot like a drive axle though. Put all for tires in the air and run the car slowly. Check that they are rotating correctly. And grab them and check for excess play.

It's the front inner C/V joints. I know it's a pain, and you probably don't want to hear it, but you have to pull the axles, dissasemble the inner C/V joints, and feel the inside of the cups. When you feel a divot there you'll know you aren't throwing your money away on a new set of front axles.

It's not the most common issue I know, but I've seen it enough times to know that's where you should be looking. It probably feels like your engine is shimmying side to side when you acellerate while traveling 35-50 mph right?

Here's a really good jpg of the divot you're looking for:

If you feel a dent there with your finger, you will feel it shake the car when there's a load on it.

Another:

A really bad one:

If it turns out one or both of these are bad:

You may find it's cheaper to buy these:

Had exact same problem with my 1g. If it vibrates underload then goes way at the top end of rpm range, check you Coil Pack. Sounds funny but mine was going out and car had same tip of vibration from the front end. If it does not do it when the car is rolling, just when you hit the gas, then its probly not drivetrain. It aall still spins when not under load.

I actually have a set of new coil packs laying around! The only reason i didnt is because i dont feel like replacing the throttle body gaskets for $6 a peice, so if anyone knows where to get reasonably priced gaskets, let me know!

And it doesnt suprise me that a bad coil pack would cause this vibration, I origonally thought that the car was missin or detonating cause the vibration, but its really looking like its the inner cv's.

You guys have been tons of help! Im thinking early next week ill have some time for laboring on the Talon. Ill keep you all posted!

Good luck, but like i said the Cvs still spin when your off the gas, if the vib. goes away when not underload but still cruising its probly not them. Could be wrong, stranger things have happened.

Definitely check and/or replaces the axels/cv joints. I had the same problem in my 99. Only vibrated under accelerating and got much worse the harder I accelerated.
Turned out my passenger side axel was blown.
Replaced it and it drove perfect!

I would take a good look at the motor mounts too. if the motor moves too much it can throw everything out of alignment causing the shaking while your on the gas torking the motor. Then smooths out off the gas. Good luck!

I have a 99 gs and.I replaced drivers side axel last night, due to cv joint exploding. Drove fine last night and this morning then I had the same shimmy Op mentioned in the steering occur. Today I replaced the outer tie rods because they were shot.
Test drive and.still had the shimmy in the steering. My theory, when I pulled the axel.I lost a lot of trans fluid. Replaced with Lucas stabilizer and everything was fine till randomly this morning. I think the thickness of the Lucas is not letting the transmission function properly. Passenger axel is fine. Inner tie rod is pretty worn but no side to side motion with car off of the ground after replacing outer tie rod. I have a meeting in the morning and after that I'm draining and replacing trans oil with mopar atf4 and we shall see what happens. If that doesn't do it I'm pretty sure its a differential problem.

Any new ideas or a solution.?

I removed the balance shaft in my mazda 6 and it made a lot of vibration when you accelerate, you could feel it in the wheel as well as it vibrated the car. I'm not completely sure our engines have one but i beleive they do, and someone could have removed it. it would take more oil then usual on an oild change. so if you have done and oil change that would be a good indicator
