Open Downpipe- Who does it?

Long story short, the previous owner of my TSi made a custom exhaust out of the stock diameter exhaust piping. His welds looked as if a 3 year old did it.

Finally, a weld broke on the downpipe to the flex pipe. So, she is open downpipe. I cut a big section of the exhaust off, the rest is still there.

So what's the problem? I am addicted to the sound! I know a lot of people say it is unbearable and annoying, but I am used to loud race cars running just headers. Except on a turbo car you can hear the turbo whistle even at idle! Even with my patially blown T-2small!

I have recently talked to some other people that have been running open downpipe on their DD for years. So I was curious to see who else is doing it, how you like it, why you choose to, power gains, etc.

I noticed a big pickup in power. But then again, I had 2 1/4" exhaust piping, Cat, and a stock muffler, so there was a lot of restriction.

I might just say screw it, take my chances DDing it, and maybe run it out the side of the bumper. I live in the middle of nowhere and drive mainly on backroads when I need to go to/around town.

The turbo is more noticeable (in my case) with the open downpipe.

My daughter loves it too. She always says "GO FAST!" or "I wanna drive!". It isn't that loud. Compared to a v8.

You should hear the turbine more with the open DP.Even during idle,neutral, and not under load.

I have a 4" exhaust on my car, straight through. It's not as bad as I thought it was going to be. I am going got get a muffler put on though.

My 1G had a 4" exhaust the whole way. It was pretty loud. Nothing like open downpipe though. Had a nice deep tone to it.

I run 3" straight back to the rear bumper when the cutout is open... I was scared to drive with it open but the spool down whistle is dope, I've become quite accustomed to the sounds.

Its not for the subtle minded, nor those trying to avoid the friendly boys in blue.

if you ask me i love it. you can look up alex209 here and ask him how mines sound. from a quarter mile away you can still hear mines roaring mad crazy. thats on a evo316g 3 inch exhaust no cat and a loud ass exhaust too. some guys even say it makes their chest vibrate, my neighbor says he knows when im home because when hes in the shower his whole bathroom vibrate . im not making anything up. for the power gain i did notice alot of gains. mostly on the low. roars like crazy on the freeway too . on the top end you wont feel that much gain but its worth it. look on extreme psi. these goes for pretty cheap. if you have a vrsf fmic like me you might have to custom it to miss that lower ic pipe. i love the sound and i live in california .

I ran an open DP on my turbo Laser for a long time becasue PR stopped stocking their cat-back system. It took forever for me to get to a local muffler and have them fab somethnig for me.

I really enjoyed it while it lasted. It definitely gets people's attention. Every pickup truck and every kid wants to race, which is easy to ignore. It's impossible to get the cops to ignore you though, so I put a nice quiet muffler on after a while.

I ran open DP for a few miles while testing my failed attempt at fixing boost creep. Honestly it sounds like shit. Just a sloppy, almost airplane like sound. Doesnt sound nearly as good as my Thermal sounds.

its loud but it sounds good when the turbo spools. i run a cut out right at the end of the DP and im running stock exhaust the rest of the way out on my galant and its the best of both worlds...quiet on the freeway and loud when i want it to be. highly recommend it. and you can pick up the stock exhaust for practically free and a cut out is no more then $150.

I've done it before when I knocked my exhaust off loading mine on the trailer. I liked it at first, then it just became annoying. The whistle was cool, but the drone on the highway is annoying. I prefer my 3" exhaust with the open wastegate. I'm catted, resonated, and muffled too. Nice on the highway, still have good flow and no boost creep on that 20g.

Open DP is screaming for the cops to pull you over. Just run a cut out if you daily drive it.

I just drove mine around yesterday with open downpipe, and I loved how it sounds. But i'll be hooking up the rest of the exhaust because I can't drive the car around being so loud.

I ran my pte 6235R open o2 until I could get a new flange welded on my DP. Was loud as hell and sounded like a big turbo diesel truck with the whistle . Now I have exhaust hooked up, 3" straight all the way to Megan muffler, no cats, no resonators, just pure deep rumbly goodness! Dumped waste gate too.
