2G: knocking diagnosis halp

So a guy at work comes up to me and tells me he has a talon that is knocking bad (after he sees my gsx), its a 97 tsi awd prtty much all stock but the motor is knocking and it has no power. like clack clack clack clack clack, and when you hit the gas the knocking goes faster.

Honestly never really fixed a knocking engine so i don't really know where to start but i was thinking of pulling the oil pan and seeing if theres anything inside of it, if its just a spun bearing do you just make sure the rods are good, the cranks good and replace bearings/whatever is necessary? do you think the block is knicked up and ####ed up now and needs to be replaced? is there a way to tell without taking the whole damn engine apart? i was thinking just pulling the bottom end and lookin around seein if i could find it (free beer

Take off the oil pan and look around to see whats going on, no majical way of seeing unless you get in there, i spun a rod and decided to do a full rebuild just now. All together again.

+1 on pulling the (Oil Pan). You can always put a (Stethoscope) on the bottom end or where ever you think it the (noise/knock) is coming from before you start pulling something off. Just a thought, besides the $13.00 will pay off in time after awhile.

pull spark plug boots, or disable injectors one at a time with link. If the knock stops when you misfire one cylinder, then you found it. drop the pan, confirm your findings. check for wear/scratches. you could cheap out at this point and just replace bearings, but odds are it will not last long. If you caught it really early you may be ok, for a little bit longer. Remember to plasti gauge it.

then wait for it to fail again. at that point, you have no choice but to rebuild. the life will keep getting shorter and shorter.

been busy didnt have a chance to jack her up and pull everything to pull pan but heres a vid of the knock. now that i hear it im thinking it might be in the top end? any input?

Too hollow sounding to be anything in the head IMO. Sounds like rod knock in cyl 3 or 4. Mine ended up being a broken wrist pin once I dug into it. There was glitter in the oil, but nothing like when a rod bearing goes. So don't let relatively clean oil fool you. Wiggle the rods if you don't see anything obvious at the crank and make sure they are tight in the piston.
