So is it normal to have a shop quote a tranny drop, rebuild and reinstallation at 1,600-1,100? or would it be cheaper to find a working tranny and have it installed?

To drop, rebuild and install, that is a pretty normal price, maybe even a little on the cheap side compared to what some shops would charge.

Yea that's not a bad price for a rebuilt trans, if you get a used one most likely it'll start doing the same thing sooner or later.

What I would do though is if you're gonna pay that much, pay for a built trans from jacks or tre or shep and put it in yourself it's not hard.

Yes i would think thats probably right on target price if you have the shop do all the work.

You could save a large headache and about half of that money by dropping yourself, and reinstalling when the shop was done rebuilding.

Like most have said. It's not a bad price. But it's also a good idea to do it yourself. That's a better price, $300-$500 for a used one, or $1100-$1600 for a rebuilt one. I don't know what shipping would be...

Anyway, just get your info together from VFAQ.com and other sources, maybe have a buddy help, and a weekend later you'll be on the road again.

When I had English Racing rebuild my tranny it was 1150 for removal, rebuild and reinstallation. He even gave me a braided clutch line and a new half shaft and boot.

This was also on a 90 transmission so to be rebuilt he had to convert it to be a 93 transmission since apparently you can't find parts to do a real 90 rebuild. It was a Stage II rebuild with expensive transmission fluid as well. I think the fluid cost alone was 47.99, a bit much but I wasn't going to cheap out on a brand new rebuild.

About half of that is labor, you can spend the money youd be spending on labor on tools and beer and do it yourself with a few friends.

If your buying the beer I'm in LOL. I agree with the replacing the tranny yourself. You can get one for the same if not cheaper rebuilt by the pros and just put it in yourself. Like I think a Shep stage 2 runs about 1200 with your core maybe a little more but shipping is like 125 total and thats with them sending you a box to send them your core.
