This is a camshaft angle sensor (CAS), sometimes called the crankshaft angle sensor. The CAS measures the position of the camshafts in the engine. From that, the engine control unit (ECU) can determine how the internal engine parts are rotating. This is essential because the ECU needs to "know" the engine position in order to determine when to fire the fuel injectors and spark plugs.

Many owners have problems with their CAS right after washing their engine bay. This is because the rubber gaskets on the CAS housing can dry up over time, and allow water (or steam) inside the sensor. Once water gets in to the sensor it is usually wrecked. Without the CAS, the ECU does not know when to fire the injectors or plugs, and the engine can not run. For this reason most people cover the CAS prior to washing the engine, and take steps to keep steam out like "drive until dry" or opening the hood.

Some early 2G DSMs have this sensor mounted on the crankshaft itself. Owners that experience problems with their CAS often have problems with the crankshaft moving too much inside the engine - a situation known as crankwalk. Crankwalk is a nasty problem - unfortunately, many 2G DSMs suffer from it.

Later 2Gs, like this one, have it mounted on one of the camshafts just like their 1G relatives. In that case the CAS can not be either a symptom or victim of crankwalk.

1G DSMs have an adjustable CAS. 2G DSMs have a non-adjustable sensor like the one shown. This means the timing can not be adjusted manually on 2Gs. Also, 1G cam sensors are slotted, while 2G cam sensors are threaded.
