F5M31 Transmission on a 1999 4G64 Spyder

Ok, I have just one question to end all my doubts and worries about this. I need to know what cars run the 4G64 block WITH the F5M31 transmission and if it will fit my car.

Of course I know the Eclipse Spyder does, but here is where it gets confusing.

According to my research, the 2.4L 1992-93 Mitsubishi Expo ALSO runs this transmission with the 2.4 block. This is in addition to the 93-95 Expo running the F5M31; however BOTH of these transmissions appear to have "F5M33" stamped on the outside. Why would that be?

So if you have read this far you may have an answer for me... Perhaps you can explain this as well: The 1992-93 Mitsubishi Galant 2.0 seem to have the same issue as well. They ALSO run this exact same transmission but ALSO have "F5M33" stamped on the outside.

Now, to get really confusing; theres the 1993-98 Galant FWD 2.4! This ALSO runs the F5M31 transmission on a 4g64 block if I am not mistaken.

I know I can also run the F5M33 on a 2.4 block if I change the clutch, flywheel, half shafts (I think), and go that way, which I do NOT want to do. Correct me if I'm wrong here guys.

So what my final question is in all of this is "What transmission will fit my 1999 Spyder?" I plan to create a Tech Article on this as well, I just want to be sure I have all the correct information in one place before I do so.

P.S. I pulled all of this information from my own experience, these forums, and http://alltransmission.com/index.php/catalogo-de-producto/90-mitsubushi

Oh, I forgot; sorry about the double post mods, but does anyone know how the bellhousings can be the same these transmissions but why they wouldnt work on this car?

The 2.4 block out of the eclipse is a "narrow" pattern block. any "narrow" pattern dsm trans will bolt up.

As long as both motors are 7-bolts your fine. Flywheel/clutch is specific to the trans not the motor. For example, the awd flywheels are smaller in diameter because they have to clear the out put shaft.

Long as you have the right flywheel wheel, FWD for a FWD, then you can bolt it up to a "narrow" patterned block.

Mighty maxs had "wide" block, and I think some expos did as well.

What you are proposing isn't exactly easy work. Below is a comparison of part numbers between the different models to check for compatibility.

95-99 Spyder 2.4L
Transmission Code: F5M31-2-VVXT
Clutch Part Number: MD746411
Pressure Plate Part Number: MD749762
Flywheel Part Number: MD188161
Starter Plate Part Number: MD194962
RH Axle Part Number: MB896796 with ABS, MB896798 w/o ABS
LH Axle Part Number: MB896795 with ABS, MB896797 w/o ABS
Bellhousing Part Number: MD745320

Here's a breakdown of Galants (E56A models). Note the dates mentioned heading each group refers to the vehicle's build date.

From February of '93 through May of '94, GS DOHC model, SNGML4M:
Transmission Code: F5M31-2-VPZF
Clutch Part Number: MD746711
Pressure Plate Part Number: MD749763, MD747172 -- The latter marked for USA use only. Either way, this pressure plate is different from the Spyder, meaning it may not be compatible. Pressure plates are relatively low cost so it would be an option to purchase this particular pressure plate if you plan to run this transmission.
Flywheel Part Number: MD188161
Starter Plate Part Number: MD194962
RH Axle Part Number: MB896796 with ABS, MB896798 w/o ABS
LH Axle Part Number: MB896795 with ABS, MB896797 w/o ABS
Bellhousing Part Number: MD745320

From February of '93 through May of '94, S/DE SOHC model, SNJEL4M:
Transmission Code: F5M31-2-VPXF
Clutch Part Number: MD746411
Pressure Plate Part Number: MD746631, MD749762 -- The latter marked for USA use only.
Flywheel Part Number: MD188161
Starter Plate Part Number: MD194962
RH Axle Part Number: MB896796 with ABS, MB896798 w/o ABS
LH Axle Part Number: MB896795 with ABS, MB896797 w/o ABS
Bellhousing Part Number: MD745320

From June of '94 through June of '97, S/DE SOHC models, SNJEL4M:
Transmission Code: F5M31-2-VVXF
Clutch Part Number: MD746411
Pressure Plate Part Number: MD746631, MD749762 -- The latter marked for USA use only.
Flywheel Part Number: MD188161
Starter Plate Part Number: MD194962
RH Axle Part Number: MB896796 with ABS, MB896798 w/o ABS
LH Axle Part Number: MB896795 with ABS, MB896797 w/o ABS
Bellhousing Part Number: MD745320

From July of '97 through February of '98, all manual transmission Galants:
Transmission Code: F5M31-2-VVXF
Clutch Part Number: MD746411
Pressure Plate Part Number: MD746631, MD749762 -- The latter marked for USA use only.
Flywheel Part Number: MD188161
Starter Plate Part Number: MD194962
RH Axle Part Number: MB896796 with ABS, MB896798 w/o ABS
LH Axle Part Number: MB896795 with ABS, MB896797 w/o ABS
Bellhousing Part Number: MD745320

So the summary there is that any 5-speed transmission from a February '93 build date up to February of '98 build date Galant should swap right in.

Some of the components found in the Spyder are also found in Expos, so here's a rundown on them.

Here's some threads that cover the F5M33 and F5M31 showing up on the same transmission. They use the same 5th gear cover so that could also be why.

Thank you so much 19Eclipse90, you have been a HUGE help! I will begin digging for a trans out of a 93-98 Galant! Thank you again!

So I have just one more issue apparently. Buying a Galant tranny from 93-98 will it bolt to the FRAME? I.e. are the mounts the exact same as well?

Valid question. All manual transmission Spyders and all manual transmission, 2.4L, '93-'98, Galants use MD744671 as the bracket mounted to the transmission casing upon which the actual, rubber mount is installed. The actual rubber mount isn't the same part number, but that seems irrelevant to me.

I see this post is old but hopefully I can still get an answer. I have a 1998 Mitsubishi galant with a 4g64 and about to be a 4g63 head on it and I'm wanting to swap it to a manual. Well the manual that goes in it is f5m31 but I read that the f5m33 which is better will also fit and I was just wanting more confirmation before I got one.
thanks for the help!

I came across this thread and thought I'd try and contribute. I'm not sure on which is better, though I assume it's the turbo one (f5m33), but here's a picture of my Galant transmission that was pulled out of a '95 Talon. I plan on installing it in my '99 Spyder with the 4g64 while I try and rebuild the one currently in the vehicle. here are some pictures for visual reference.

I'm thinking about doing a transmission swap from the f5m31 manual transmission to the f5m33 manual. I know the axles are different at the transmission, but do the hubs have different splines also from the Spyder GS & the gst or ar they the same?
