what is the most cost efficient route to go with tuning wise? im new to dsm so i dont know much about them. especially tuning. ive heard of dsm and ecmlink but like ive said i dont know much so i dont know what needs to be done to convert it so you can run these links. thanks.

all depends on what your going to do with your car. Safc can be used if your doing something simple like 650 injectors 255 pump and t25-16g turbo's. If your going all out massive injectors huge turbo E85 etc... Then your going to wanna do Ecmlink. Your going to have to get a Eprom ecu and get it socketed. ECMTuning, Inc. sells a ecmlink/eprom package. Then for tuning your either going to have to do a lot of read up on how to tune, Or if you know someone that is good with ecmlink. Other wise go to a shop.

yeah i was just going to do basics. fmic, i have a evo3 16g, 650s, o2 dump. stuff like that. so an safc would be best?

No, the SAFC would not be best. It would be adequate. Think of it as a bandaid. The SAFC fools the ECU via MAF into thinking there is more/less air coming into the motor. With link you dont have to fool the ECU, you simply reset it for what you have on the car and save it to the ECU.

If i were you, i would go with DSMLink V3 Lite if your budget will allow for it. Your car would run much better with link than it ever will with a SAFC. It is very easy to use and doesn't take very long to learn, and once you learn it is a piece of cake.

Plus when you have link you can run launch control/anti lag, simulate idle switch, simulate narrowband through the wideband and so many other things that the SAFC can't do. Another plus is that you can log your car with it to see what your engine/ecu is doing to diagnose problems or just get a finer tune.

well it looks like im just gunna have to start saving up for it then. LOL thanks for the advice

thats what i think aswell

You also need to take your year model into consideration as to what would be the best route. The 98-99 ecus are flashable and do not employ the eprom tech.

Edit: read your profile. Disregard

The most cost effective route for 1g would be to tune with Dsmap. Since it is free and all. I love how no one on this site every recommends it, hmm..

Anyway heres the link if you'd like to check it out yourself

DS-MAP - Index

Its as capable as anything out there and its free to use. If you have eprom it will cost you almost nothing to set it up. Save that $600 for upgrades imo.

wow :thumb: thanks alot. im sure this will be what i will be using. just have to get myself an eprom ecu.

No problem. After 5 approved posts you will gain access to the download, then the fun starts. Base maps are supplied so just set injector size and your running. I wont ever be using anything else for as long as i own my 1g. I love the ui.

Yes it is free. But it is hard as shit to use when you are just starting to tune... Most people I meet hate Jackal. You have to write your own codes, a pain in the ass, and it takes much longer to learn. Link is worth the money.

Write your own codes? Not since ive been using it. Maybe 5 years ago. It was created by a dsm'er for dsm'ers. Download program, load base maps, set injectors size, turn key. Thats about it really. I personally love the ui, its layed out pretty nice. You can tell its was purposely designed for a dsm.

Alright, but i've known a few people that have used it and they told me it takes longer to fine tune the car and for a new tuner its just not practical.

But i've never used it so I don't know from first hand. You obviously do.

OP, i guess you could try using Jackal and if you don't like it, make the switch to link.

Likewise, ive helped a friend tune with v2 and i though that was just awful. But never used it on my own vehicle so i cant compare ease of use. Jackal does have a patch that incorporates "cell tracking" in with the logging. Its pretty fool proof after that.

Hmm, i might try it on my next DSM and see if I like it.

Yea i ran it on my 5spd car and loved it. Sold that car and bought an auto last week. Converting it to SD atm, should be up and running with Jackal this weekend. If i get the time that is.

You could always dl the software just to play around with.

I think I will, just to see what all the hype is about :p.
