My friend saw a 1g sitting next to his friends garage shop, and he popped the hood hoping it was a 4g63 in it, but instead theres this motor in it. Car has no badging on it and that doesn't look like a 420a motor to me.

I love my 1.8l.. Beat the hell out of it everyday. Good gas mileage and reliable.

deff 1.8 like stated before. Get it cheap and put a 4g in it very fun swap

With gas prices yesterday, premuim was 3.99 near me @_@
I might consider picking it up if its in good mechanical shape LOL

might as well buy a gst or gsx for the amount of money for the swap.

The amount of money for the swap could be next to nothing if he's skilled and has sources for parts. I'm sorry to be rude, but it drives me crazy to see that band wagon response "you can do anything with enough money and fabrication and blah blah blah" / "it'll cost you sooo much to swap in that motor, just buy a turbo car". Most people that give these responses have NEVER completed a non factory motor swap, hell I bet most haven't pulled and reinstalled a motor.. And its not just DSMers, every car forum has these responses.

This response would be good if somebody wanted an all wheel drive LS1 colt with twin turbo and nawwzzz. But swapping a 4g63t in place of the 4g37 is a relatively simple and economical swap.. Not to mention, most people love the feeling of telling someone their car came with xxx engine and they swapped in yyy motor for whatever reason they choose. It makes you feel good, and makes you not the guy that went out and bought a turbo car and put a fart can on it and calls himself a tuner.

That being said, the guy never even mentioned a swap, and I'm ranting, so.. I'm sorry, its not you, just the generic response that I'm so tired of seeing.

My little '91 base Eclipse that I DD around town in has just passed the 200k mile mark on it's 4G37 - still holds oil real good. Only things I've done to it is valve seals, lifters, cam seal and rear main seal...and two belt jobs with a new water pump on the 2nd belt changeout.

Next belt change,I'll have to change out the tensioner pulley-bearings getting a bit loose.

Saw a '94 Eclipse out in a yard with the rear end all smashed in. looked at the odo and it was reading 289k miles - definitely a good life for a 4G37, but heard owners having 500k plus and still going strong on these motors...

Oh, during the summer, I can muster 34 mpg on the thing, and being an automatic.

When the 4G63 came out, it started out as a SOHC in the earlier Galants.

There was a 4G61-being the 1.8 block with a slightly smaller version of the 2.0 head that the Eagle Summits used in the late 80's

EDIT: In reading the stories in that attached link, I can verify the rpms on these little motors since I had, what was called, a "Cyclone" 4G37-a 12v motor in a '90 Eclipse 5speed. Instead of the standard 8 valve head, it had 12 being the extra valve was for the MCA-JET induction system. Plus, it had adjustable tappets instead of hydraulic lifters.

I did muster 140plus mph out of that motor and it wanted to keep going strong, but at 6200rpms, it was reaching red line, thus I didn't want to push it any further. But what top end this little motor had..!
