would you mod a car first or get dsmlink first

ALright my gsx has an injen intake and other than that its stock.. I have really been wanting to mod it out.. e3 16g , mbc, dp, cat back , exhaust mani , fuel pump, injectors.. all that good stuff ¦) I also plan to get dsm link
Do you think I should get the dsmlink first and learn about using it first.. or should i just mod the car and get the dsmlink later. I want to mod the car but I want to make sure I do everything in the right sequence. :hmm:

Do any scheduled maintenance first! Timing/balance shaft belts, fix any oil leaks etc

there will be many different answers to that question but i would say do the dp, exhaust, fuel pump and then the dsmlink.

I got DSMlink back when I had a stock turbo still and it was a great decision. It allowed me to get the most out of all my upgrades since then as soon as they were installed.

All ofthat stuff has been done the motor was completely gone through before I got it timing belt water pump you know ..

Link first (after maintenance). No reason to have mods on the car if you can't benefit from them.

I see I see.. so even. With your stock turbo you could optimize everything that you did to it.. what about having everything stock.. can tuning on stock with dsmlink help.. can you really push much

Another thing you can look into is CeddyMod since you have a '99. You'll get a cable and use EVOscan/ECUflash to tune the car. Might be a more cost effective route if you are cheaper.

But I'm a link user so I'd recommend link :)

And yes, you'll want to get it before modding your car. Otherwise you start throwing on parts and get only partial performance increase. And once you upgrade your fuel system (which should be towards the top of the list), you'll need a way to control the larger injectors.

Didn't even realize he was a 99. I've used both Link and Evoscan/ecuflash. (Link in the 1g, ecuflash in the 3g). Ecuflash is very userfriendly and much cheaper (I bought my cable for $30 shipped and all you need is the $25 evoscan other than that) whereas link is going to be $500 for V3 Full version + eprom ecu.

That's kinda what I was thinking.. just leave the car stock since the cold and winter is coming and get all the stuff I want to mod to it and do it all towards spring. It'll prob be more reliable being stock over winter

I'm guessing it has less functions as the link. LIke launch control and stuff. What all does it allow you to do.

Does the ceddy mod limit the things you can do?

im using ecuflash on my evo 3 with an evo 8 ecu swap and its very userfriendly

You will have to open up your ecu and see if it is eprom. If it is then you will need to socket it. if it is not you will need to get an eprom ecu. go to ecm link site, they explain everything in great detail. I would suggest getting an engine management system first. You will be able to see where your deficiencies are and upgrade according to necessity for what is needed instead of just picking an upgrade path and buying all mods that are used. Having all supporting mods and having a well tuned car is two totally different things.

to run the ceddy mod

Note, the above does not apply to using CeddyMod. This is only for ECMlink or a Keydiver/custom burned EPROM chip.

so if i wanted to run ceddy mod... it would just plug in and control ecu?!? i feel as if i am missing something

You do not have to open your ECU to see if it's EPROM. It won't be. The 98-99 ECU's along with EVOScan (for datalogging) and ECUFlash use the OBD2 port and the flash plug located under the dash behind the OBD2 port. Just read through the thread that Snowboarder linked.

Maintenance then your choice of logger/tuning combo. You will get the most gains going this route than buying parts and then tuning. Plus you'll know how you motor is doing and how each mod affects your performance.

alright.. thats exactly what i was looking for.. im going to read that link i just needed to know if i had to do anything and you answered it :thumb:

yeah.. i see what your saying.. its not all mods but the tune to em

i dont want this thread to end .... id like anybodys personal experience with dsmlink or ceddymod.....

How to build a reliable car:
Maintenance > Tuning > Fuel > everything else.

X2, but if you buy an abused dsm your stuck on maintenance for a hell of a long time because the last owner was careless. If all maintenance is done then tuning is the first priority, doesn't matter what car your project is!!!
