Driving my 98 Eclipse back from the shop, the mechanic said im boosting 15-17 Stock turbo. Well on the ride back the pipe connecting my turbo to the intercooler came off from the intercooler side. Mechanic said that if i floor the pedal, that the boost will spike past 17 and the pressure is making the pipe come off.. Does that sound right? Anything else it could be? He says my wastegate is all the way open and he cant lower the boost anymore unless i get a new manifold and external wastegate, please help guys. He says basically i cant floor my pedal.. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like it could be a couple easy things. I would first check that the clamps holding the couplers on are tight. 2nd make sure that it has a lip for the clamp to keep it from falling off.. and also sometimes if its not a turbo clamp it wont hold under boost. Those sound like the obvious 1st look to me

Get a t-bolt clamp and tighten it down. If that doesn't work, make sure there is a lip around the intercooler inlet pipe, if not, get one welded one. Is that the factory intercooler? Otherwise it's not a big deal, just get it fixed.

tighten the hose clamp maybe? i use reg hose clamps and have not had any pipes pop off at 20psi

are you on a stock intercooler? you should have a bead on the pipe to keep it on as said earlier

That is a good point. I assumed that he had already tried that but now, rereading his post, maybe he didn't. I'm still on the stock worm clamps as well, 14 psi but i boost leak test to 20 and I've never blown one off either.

well as said by many, 17psi isnt your problem either your piping isnt flared so there is no lip for the clamp to grab or it is to loose. usually when i see this i just use 2 hose clamps or 1 t-bolt clamp. it happens to us all when the pipe isnt flanged, either clamp with more or get a better clamp. problem fixed, what turbo are you runnin? im wonderin y you cant get the boost down.

doesn't it bother you guys at all that he is being told that he can't lower the boost past 17psi? isn't stock boost on a 4g63 like half of that?

im more worried that his mechanic is telling him that there is nothing to do about the pipe popping off

I have a HKS intercooler, 550 injectors if that helps.. And yeah its tightned... HE said a boost controller wont help because my wastegate is all the way open...

There you go, 15-17 is fine since he has 550 injectors (you do have a tuner, right?)

Ok, go check the inlet on your HKS intercooler and make sure that the beaded lip is still there. Then order some t-bolt clamps and get back to boostin'!

You mechanics doing something fishy. b/c a stock t-25 turbo shouldnt be spiking 17 psi if the boost level is at stock. Also if all the clamps are tight you need to check if there is a welded lip to hold the clamp on... I dont entirely trust your mechanic as said from other above i will agree:hmm:

im not familiar with a hks kit for a 2g. so im guessing piping is custom? so they might not of been beaded. does the pipe in question have a bead or raised lip around it? if not thats your prob and yes you should be able to lower your boost below 17.

Ill def. order a T clamp... but what if the pipe isnt beaded

If the pipe isn't beaded you can use some hairspray on the end. Or you can have a bead welded on. Hairspray would be easiest probably and quickest. Make sure the t-bolt clamps are tight too.

Whether the pipe is beaded or not use some aerosol hairspray on the end of the pipe before you clamp it back together. Itll work better if the pipe is beaded giving the clamp something to hold onto. The hairspray will make it sticky and help seal it to the pipe so that it doesnt slide and lift off the pipe as easy under boost. Also definitely go with a t-bolt clamp, you can get them tighter in my opinion without worrying about stripping the head on them. As for the mechanic telling you that you CANT lower your boost idk about all that. The stock turbo setup on a 2g shouldn't go past 15 psi at the most because that is where the stock fuel system cuts out at unless you have upgraded your pump as well with your injectors. Also idk what kind of mechanic would say that a boost controller wouldnt help. It isn't called a boost CONTROLLER for nothing. I believe I'd have to fire that mechanic and find another one that knew a little more about what they were doing ### that just sounds fishy to me but thats my .02 on it. Good luck with it

A boost controller will only raise your boost. You can't lower your boost below the wastegate pressure with a boost controller. I guess according to your logic it should be called a boost RAISER.

What does your boost gauge say? It could be creeping, do you have a 3" downpipe?

Do you have to force the pipe into the coupler when connecting it? If so that pressure will surely pop it off. And like stated I never have beaded a pipe on my intercooler setup. HAIRSPRAY FOR THE WIN!!

No I know that you can't lower your boost below the wastegate pressure with a boost controller but what I meant by that was that you CAN turn your boost up and bring it back down with the controller. You don't take the controller and turn it up to 20psi and your stuck there you can bring it back down also. Maybe it wouldn't help in his situation. I believe that he may just need a new wastegate if he wants to bring it back down. Either way I still think that mechanic of his doesn't completely know what hes doing with it. Maybe that's just me:hmm:

You shouldn't have to FORCE it into the coupler but of course you will have to push it together. The hairspray should actually help it to slide into the coupler and then you just tighten it down with the clamps and it should be good to go. :thumb:

I talked to the previous owner and he said that the O2 housing for the turbo is from the big 16 G would that do it?
Also can you explain in detail the 3in downpipe creeping thing.. Because i do have a 3in
