Unlike the states, we can import once the vehicle is 15 years old, not 25. So this baby was purchased in march, was available for import in may (built in 05/95), and I was in vancouver, BC June 4th to pick it up and drive it 2000km up here to northern Alberta. Its literally given me nothing but problems (oil fill cap gasket to start on the drive home, then rear suspension, head gasket, and finally the tbelt went), so i figure i might as well go from the ground up and do anything and everything that could fail on me LOL.

Full pics can be found here.. Evo III pictures by chriswitz - Photobucket

Starting from the lot in Japan to where its sitting now in the garage.

Im going for all low end power as I have plans to get into more heavy autocross, and eventually lead into rallycross and hopefully full on rally's. Just looking for some opinions from the guys on here who have been doing it for a while:aha:

edit: and just to note, when it landed here i had the tbelt, pulleys, cam seals, waterpump all done.

Thanks for the comments guys. As far as RHD in a LH traffic system, its not to bad. Some left hand turn intersections can be annoying, and passing 18wheelers on the highway, but like I tell everyone who asks, patience solves both those problems.

I believe the curb weight for the GSR trim is 1260kg so roughly 2772lbs. With the AC system completely out, the deck, speakers, japanland 6 minidisc changer, and spare tire/jack all out Im sure i've dropped close to 100pounds there. I'm hoping to have it down to atleast 2400lbs (1090kg's) when all is said and done. I should have a bunch of progress pics in the coming days, off shift in the morning til monday woo.

Also, what are your guys thoughts on a timing belt and oil pump? Should i go with stock or aftermarket? After having a stock belt fail on me after 3k of very, very soft use(my suspension was wacked all summer, and the day after getting new rears put it she let go) im kinda weary of using another. I guess when I done the head gasket i could of not had enough tension, but there was about 400km between the HG going and the belt going. The car had 74500km when brought over, and is now at 78000km.

Just some more food for thought. IM/EM everything i've read is telling me that going to a SMIM will lose bottom end for more top end, is there anything i should look at for better lower end or is the stock e3 efficient enough? Should i get a port and polish done? Same goes for exhaust, would a equal length tubular(dnp) be worth it, or even a FP race mani? Or would a port and polish on the stock e3 mani be good enough? Again, I want all low and mid range power.

the FP manifold would be great for this application, its runners are really large and it meets up with the 7 cm housing of the e3

You are going to hear alot of people say, stick with oem components. I have had no problems with the OEM mitsu timing belt, alot of peole have had sucess with Gates belt. HKS is awesome but very exspensive. Personally I use oem components I can afford, water pump, timing belt, oil pump. But to pay 35 dollars a piece for the 3g lifters is too much (totaling 16), I went with ITM or Topline.

As far as components what is your budget like? I am taking a guess that it doesn't matter because you build list is not a a budget build. If that's true then I recommend going with a copper head gasket.

Thanks for the info. My budget is to not waste money. If something is going to improve the reliability/durability of the car as a whole im not going to cheap out on it. Can you recommend a copper HG?

Also just got word from mark at campbells that the head checked out okay aside from the damaged valves, so let the building begin :hellyeah:

Love the car buddy. I have always liked these and always wanted one. Cant wait to see how it turns out. Mitsu makes good oem parts so i second that about running oem parts on different parts of the car. The oem timing belts are very good and the water pumps and oil pumps. How did you end up finding this car? Best of luck and keep posting pics.

Quick update. Got some work done tonight.. starting stripping the interior. Will have the dash out tomorrow, should be a good little weekend job getting all the sound deadening out. Hoping that the damn hoist comes in friday so i can get the block out next week!
Firstly sorry for the bad quality pics as there all taken from my BB.
How the engine bay looks..

Awesome car! my buddys got a Evo 5 here in CO yes it is that awesome. Depending on your budget, if your SERIOUS about raly/autocross and want to WIN her would be my list in terms of price. camber plates are a must and sperical bearing would be advisable if your really serious

Penske shocks/custom springs (the dampers alone will run you 10k for the car
AST dampers custom springs (my buddy with evo5 has these, badass)
KW coilovers (lots of guys run these, with good bushing/sphericals these can be top bang for the buck)
Konis with your choice springs
personally I love my TEIN's you can get very high end stuff from them and with my SS kit I can order custom springs from them, which I plan on at some point.

EDIT: OEM parts are always pretty safe for these cars considering Mitsu facoted in rally/road racing when they built it. Unless your going extreme say pikes peak or full rally car I would trust OEM, they have THOUSANDS of hours of test time on those components

Thanks for the info. The suspension is probably going to be the hardest piece of this puzzle to solve as its almost surely going to have to come from oversea's, so im not in any rush to get that sorted out. I may get the d2 sport coilovers to run for autocross, but as far as a suspension setup for rally goes im no where near close to a decision. I have no idea how next year will unfold in terms of work which is going to play a big role in my time to venture out and do some events.

as far as copper head gaskets check this out FFWD Connection - Race Injuns That Will Freeze Your Brain

also they make copper gaskets for 7cm turbo housing, I am actually going to purchase some turbo gaskets soon to test them out. I really like the idea of using copper to seal. It expands really well under heat and can retain high compression.

What i want to know is if people are running the FP 68HTA for auto cross/rally. does it spool up fast enough? I mean in theory it should, same 7cm hot side housing. Can anyone give some input to this.

I'll take a look into those. I know i spray copper rtv sealant when i do my turbo to mani gaskets, so a full copper would make sense LOL.

As far as the 68 goes, there is a US member on a early evo board i go on who said its his favourite "small" turbo for autocross and really advocates it, so Im taking his word for it :thumb:

Have one more small area of sound deadening to chisel out. Still no hoist, back on shift tomorrow for 4, so hoping for next weekend now.

Oh and if anyone is interested in a genuine e3 turbo... mine will be up for sale in the coming days. PM if interested. roughly 78k KM's on it, afaik never seen over stock boost(stock ecu, no controller upon import to canada).
