Alright fellas I need help. Two weeks ago I install a new exedy oe replacement clutch. Went fine car ran great. After having to put a gallon of coolant in my car every day I decided to change the water pump at the the same time also decided to change the timing belt and balance shaft belt. I live in a little town with mechanics that only like working on "american muscle". I followed the vfaq got all timing mark lined up correctly replaced timing belt, balance shaft belt, all new pulleys, and water pump. I took the car for a test drive and ran awesome. I was proud of myself. After about 2 miles the car went into a stumble and threw a p0300 code and felt like it was only running on two cylinders. I pulled the car over to the side of the road, turned the car off check a few things under the hood. Started it back up and ran like it was brand new. Drove another mile or so stumbled again and started missing again. Any ideas? I looked through the forums and saw alot of p0300 codes but most of them ran like bad all the time. Mine runs great then goes into a tizzy until you turn it off then back on... Hope someone has an idea. Thanks for your time.

im sure you figured out the code means random misfire, so theres a series of troubleshooting you need to do because there are many components that may cause it. sparkplugs/spark plug wires/coilpack/ a short/ fuel problems (dont even want to write all the possible reasons for that one which pretty much can be anything or everything)

I just found it odd that right after the timing belt install it would happen. I changed the plugs BPR6ES gaped at .030. The only sensor that I was around was the Crank position sensor. I would guess that the plugs and wires would be out of the question due to it runs great and then starts running on two cylinders. I wouldnt think the plugs and wires would start working properly just by turning the car off and then back on.

sounds like a coil problem but it would be dropping two clys then and it would always be those two so it wouldnt really be a random missfire then.

i would check coil resistance

does this start happening once the car is warm or even when its cold when driving?
does it act up when u drive i bumpy roads?

Ok I will check the resistance of the coil pack... How do I do this? And yes the crank sensor was plugged in and never unplugged or removed the CAS.

Ok here we go. I installed a 1g Cas and set base timing to 5* btdc with the timing plug grounded. I checked the coils they read 12.57 - 12.98 still runs fine until driving for a couple of miles then starts runnin on 2 cylinders again. I am not sure what to do.

I am completely confused! I drove it for 20 miles and not even a hiccup. But then started it drove 4 miles and it went to 2 cylinders.

You should check your power transistor unit, also when you swapped to the 1g CAS did you change the spark plug firing order?

Yes I did swap the firing order. I saw on vfaq that u could either change ## plug wires around or swap the 2 blue wires on the coil harness connector which is what I did. As far as the power transistor I see multiple ways if testing it which is the best if any? You guys are great I really do appreciate the help.

Ok finally got a black top cas and thought it would fix it. It actually made it worse, it would start up running on 2 cylinders. Got in the car and bumped the center console kick panel and it ran on all 4 for just a couple seconds. I pulled the bottom connector from the ecu and the injector wire for cylinder one was barely making connection on the ecu pin. I gave the micro terminal a little squeeze and plugged it back in. Been running great every since... Goes to so how carried away someone can get. But thanks for all the help Dsmtuners has the best forums around.
