So i just bought a 96 GST Spyder, completely bone stock except for the wheels and brakes. On my way home from the dealer, i was at about 80mph and the stock boost gauge was maxed and the car started to bog really bad. It boosts fine any other time I've tried, except when its max on the boost gauge, and only time ive been hitting that is freeway driving and at around 80... just wondering what the issue might be :banghead:... I will be testing for boost leaks this weekend, and im going to try and pick up a real boost gauge today so i can further narrow it down. Thanks for the help, been outta the game for a bit, but getting back in.

So i just picked up a Sunpro Vac/Boost gauge, its not that Autometer that i wanted, but it was there... will be installing it in about 5 min actually, once i can figure out how to install that damn A pillar pod, hate drilling into my car

So I'm in my under building parking, working on my car, got quite a bit done so far, to hit a roadblock, or in literal terms, a fire wall.... If there's anyone in the san diego, preferably around the mission valley / northpark area, that would be willing to assist me in getting this damn boost gauge installed, please feel free to msg me, thanks....LOL anyways, off to clean my headlights:confused:

So I halfway installed this boost gauge, I know its mounted very poorly and I haven't installed the light yet, but at idle, its at 10-12 vac... Which I know isn't where its supposed to be, other issue I'm having now, is that it idles around 650, which in some cases is better the a high idle, but it sounds like its not getting enough of something to keep it running. There's white smoke out the exhaust as well...

I dont know, its gotten better the more i drive it... so it idle, im at 10-12 Vac, while driving with no pressure on the gas pedal, its at 20 vac, and when applying gas, it goes all the way to 20 boost (which is the end of the gauge) and starts bogging pretty bad... now the issue is now whether its the boost controller or something else is causing the issues... as far as a boost leak test, i will be doing that this weekend:ohdamn:

i would not hit wot until the boost you are running fits on your gauge because you can destroy a motor. it sounds to me like the boost controller is either cranked all the way or stuck closed.

interesting, yeah, i dont go into WoT, and have been keeping the boost gauge to no more then 15psi. It runs very smooth when i do that except for the low idle... Is there even a way for the stock boost controller to be turned all the way up? I am considering on just getting a new one to replace it but not looking forward to the costs involved.

the wastegate line running to it may be broken or melted causing a vacuum leak that makes the car run poorly at idle and does not open the wastegate at all. its happened to plenty of us, just do a boost leak test :D

Ok so its been a little while since i updated anyone... I got a Injen Intake, using a evo 9 BoV... messed with all of the vacuum tubes, every one of them look very good, if not new. One issue i had though, was when i installed the intake, for the first 10 secs or so, my vac was at 20 and the car was running AMAZING... but after the 10 secs, it went back to the 10 vac, so i am at a loss again... Would love to meet up with someone out here to help out, hopefully a case of beer is enticing enough, LOL

First off - have you check the condition of the spark plugs? You'd be surprised how crazy a fouled plug will act.

Not having my GST anymore, I can't remember how the boost gauge read and acted under idle but that doesn't sound to far off from normal.. After 10 seconds of idling your getting some weird reading?

Do you have a manual boost controller yet? I couldn't tell form your post. It could just be boost creep. But you can make a little boost leak tester for super cheap from the good ol home depot. Just google and i'm sure you can find it.

I just found my old DSM manuals and CD's with all sorts of stuff. I'll see if I Can find them again and pass it your way. I'm in Pacific Beach so you could always buzz by and we could have a look at it.

Yeah, i just checked the spark plugs and the wires... lets just say that i wouldnt wish those wires on anyone even if i didnt like them... as for the plugs themselves, they looked good considering the cables... i replaced them, but my non-intelligence got the best of me and i picked up bosch platinum plus

From what ive read and talk to people, my vac should be around 20 when im at idle... not at 10 which it is at now

Nope, im still running stock everything except the intake and BoV (stock evo9 bov)

that would be awesome, all ive been working with is my haynes manual which is great, but sometimes i feel like i need a little more

Pac Beach isnt too far away, im in Northpark, so thats a quick shot up the 8

That's very good news, so the plug wires were shitty? Did the plugs smell like fuel real bad or have any oil on them?

It's all starting to come back to me now - I believe the 2g's had some issues with arching in the plug boot and could give you some problems. Now honestly, I don't know what guys are running for spark plugs now days - but all my DSM's never saw anything else than NGK BPR6ES / and 7ES. I would recommend taking those expensive plugs back and starting basic with a 6ES (gapped correctly) then go a little colder when you crank up the boost.

Keep in mind it could be a funky gauge, but I would be more worried about not being able to build and hold boost than the vacuum readings being a bit off. :thumb:

Nah, the plugs looked pretty good actually... just the wires being shoddy

Yeah those NGKs are the ones i think i should have bought, but ima ride around with the bosch for a little bit cause i am doing a lot of driving this weekend

true, it could be a funky gauge, was brand new though.... well im not having an issue building and holding boost... im having an issue with my vac being off, as well as the boost controller not stopping the boost... hitting 20psi on a stock t25 seems a little scary

So on my way home from vegas, i realized that my boost controller is finally working for some odd reason... but my gauge might be off because the boost gauge reads 16-17 as the cutoff which doesnt sound right, as well as the fact that i dont feel the car boosting until 5psi...hmmm
