Hello everyone.

I'm starting to get into the tune-up thing with my 4G63 NA. The first couple of things i got were an Apexi air filter and a SAFCII (not installed yet), and i'm thinking about what should be the next step. Got a couple ideas, but i'm not really sure about what should come next.

The first idea is getting a AEM wideband, along with a fuel pressure regulator, and tune the mix. The fact is that i don't know if all those thing put together will improve performance, or it's worthless to get all that stuff.

The other idea is start to swap internals like camshafts, inyectors, a bigger fuel pump... but that way i don't know if the ecu will help or screw me.

So i would use a little help :D

Well you dont have a turbo, so the stuff you have will not help you for performance right now. Some things you could do to get more power out of a non turbo would be to either upgrade to turbo (since you have a 4g63 block) or you could get cams maybe rebuild the block and bore it out. If I was you I would take that engine and build it for a Turbo.

its not that i don't believe you but i don't understand how you got a 2g in europe and the fact that its an NA 4g63 in a 97??

The export versions of the 2GNT got 4G63's, it was only us lucky domestic people that got stuck with the 420A.

Given that he has got a 4G63 turboing it would be the most cost effective way to get real HP.

Well, the fact is that i don't know if the rods and pistons are EXACTLY the same as in the turbo models (Suspect they aren't) so it turns a little less "Cost effective" since i got to swap rods and pistons. That's why i thought about the NA way first.

Almost every eclipse 'till 99 got a 4g63 here in europe, and the GS was just not turbo. There are some 420A's tho, but they are a very rare thing. It's also hard to find a RS.

Anyway, for the faithless and the archieves:

I wouldn't expect the pistons would be the same but there are lots of options for building a turbo engine, a lot more than are available for a non-turbo engine.

About all you can do with the NA is improve it's VE and tune the AFR with the SAFC. I haven't heard of any built NA 4G63 even reaching the levels of the stock turbo version.

It all depends on what your goals are. If you just want to improve what you have the regulator isn't needed, you not going to need more fuel than the stock pump and injectors can deliver. The SAFC and wideband will allow you to tune the AFR and get whatever performance is left on the table.

I'm not sure that the air filter, if it winds up sucking in hot air, will help over say a K&N panel filter for the factory filter pod. Replacing the rubber hose after the MAF with a hard pipe to the intake would help a little. Then look at the exhaust for additional flow improvements.

well you learn something new everyday.

i would be really surprised if your euro internals wouldn't hold stock boost on a t25. that might keep you at bay until you get internals..

Caballo, I am also experiencing the same problem with a 4g63nt so please tell me how it works out and what parts are you using because there is really not much on the internet about this particular engine.

I have an NA 4g63 installed in my TSi AWD. It hold the 14b turbo just fine. It runs like a champ. I just run 93 octane fuel due to the higher compression.

YOu can turbo it and it will be just fine. Keep the boots below 14 though, the ring landings are thinner.

Yes, but I doubt they are identical engines.

You can get horsepower from a n/a 4g63 with a ecu upgrade, injector upgrade and fpr.I have owned mitsubishis since 89 a starion turbo 84,a conquest turbo 87, a 92 eclipse gs, a 91 plymouth laser ,a 95 gsx eclipse and a 94 eclipse gs all manuals and i still have the 87 tsi conquest and 94 gs. The stock internals on the 1g are much stronger than 2g,and less likely to crank walk. The heads on 1gs are the turbo heads on 2gs,and 1gs turbo, not 2g non turbos.I was able to get about 40 extra hp out my gs 94 by upgrading to 450cc injectors, ecu upgrade ,fuelpump and regulator.i also installed a header downpipe and muffler.thats it plenty of people get alot of hp out of n/a cars hondas for example so unless your planning on racing you have alot of options!;)
