That is the sensor that tells the ecu when to use the cold cycle and warm cycle. If the engine is cold you will have a hell of a time trying to get it started with that sensor disconnected. You should be able to use the wires coming out of it and splice them into the wire harness where they go and be fine. Do you know if the sensor itself works?

Cool, yeah my laser has that problem when its cold its hard to turn on but after a million cranks it turns on LOL, btw that pic I posted isn't my car, just an example, but I found out it was a coolant temp sensor, but I need a part # for it

hope this is what you were looking for... i posted up wrong parts and locations since i wasn't paying attention and i was posting 2g stuff but im posting this in its place so someone doesn't get the misinformation i posted up earlier and use it. heres the correct 1g t-stat housing/waterneck parts locations and their part numbers. i pulled this out of the mitsu 1g repair manual and the part numbers out of CAPS.

I see several sensors in your picture but I am going to assume that you are talking about the one with the 2 wires coming off which I believe is the A/C Thermoswitch.

By the way, very clean engine!!!

Or is it this:

I've been looking this up all night and I put this picture together to straighten this out. I'm pretty sure that this is correct. Its difficult because there is some incorrect information going around. If anyone can confirm this for me that would be awesome.

now i wonder, im looking alittle closer in CAPS and its not showing the top sensor... :ohdamn: the part numbers i gave for them are correct, but that top sensor isn't the coolant temp or the gauge coolant temp. now im trying to figure out what that big top sensor is going into the neck of the housing.

:dsm:

Just to make it perfectly clear (since there is some conflicting info here)

The top switch is NOT the temp sensor for the ECU or for the gauge. It IS indeed the AC thermoswitch, as was mentioned earlier in the thread :hellyeah:

Post #9 is correct (The pic with the word balloons). Everything else is wrong.

In the thermostat housing:
1.The coolant temp sensor is the one thats involved in starting your car (two wires).
2. The temp gauge sensor is for the gauge cluster (single wire).
3. The thermo vacuum valve (F shaped) is for the emissions system.

In the thermostat cover/neck:
4. AC thermo switch that controls the AC fan.

im so lost and confused with this water temp switch, im looking through the mitsu service manual install/removal procedures of the t-stat housing/waterneck and it only shows the coolant sensor and coolant gauge and CAPS is showing a coolant switch but its not showing it in the neck like that. heres the PN's but i can't verify their locations...

coolant temp sensor - MD069879
coolant temp gauge - MD091056
water temp switch - MB568959

don't look at the above graphics I posted because they are WRONG.

:dsm:

2Gs have 2 sensors (gauge and temp sensor) and 1Gs have 4 (All are correct in post #9. Maybe thats the confusion??

Thanks for helping me clear that up guys! I've seen the A/C Thermoswitch called the Coolant Temperature switch many times on here and I had a hard time sorting it out myself. I kept going to back and forth from my computer to my car until I finally figured it out.

Clutch GSX, I agree that a lot of the confusion stems from the differences in the 1g and 2g thermostat housings.

Gofer, I can confirm that these 2 part numbers that you posted are correct:
Coolant temp sensor - MD069879
Coolant temp gauge - MD091056

I'm not sure about the other one.

To the OP, the sensor in question is indeed the A/C thermoswitch. It is only used to shut the A/C compressor off if the engine temperature gets too high. If you don't have A/C then you don't need this sensor. Thus far I have been unable to find a part number for you. But at least we all know what it is called now.

By the way, feel free to shower me in reputation points :thumb:

alright, im clearing this up right now since i posted a bunch of misinformation from the get go because the 1g/2g waterneck and t-stat housings are completely different and im mildly retarded sometimes... i did a few hours of searching the 1g dealership repair manual and came up with this, i included the part numbers i pulled off of CAPS as well. SORRY FOR MY PREVIOUS POSTS BECAUSE THEY WERE WRONG BUT THIS ONE IS 110% CORRECT!!! merry christmas btw... :rocks:

I know this is old, but this thread just saved me. I was extremely puzzled, couldn't find out what it was. So thank you for your past discussion! :D

looking for any info on this nipple that I put the white box around. I have a new part and mine doesn't have this. My old one is not worth trying to reuse. Anyone have info on where to source the part and if it should have come with the OEM part?

thanks

so I have my new upper/lower thermo housings...

#6, the A/C Fan Switch mine has a plug in it, and the F'ing thing is fighting me coming out. No issue with lack of tools or anything...given how good its in I rather just leave it then mess with it and possibly use another location if its safe.

That being said, I have deleted the EGR, so location #2 is now free. What, if any, will it harm if I move the A/C switch to this location? Same thread pitch and all its just sitting on the other side of the thermostat now.

Pic for reference, Thank you!
