You can reuse a bottom end after valves hit... Unless you see cracks or holes in the tops of your pistons your fine, the weak point isn't the piston head, it's the valve and the lifters that take all the abuse.

So "dents" on pistons won't cause hot spots and eventually lead to further problems? Come on dude, stop giving out wrong information.

can i put a reman head on my 90 tsi with valve dents in the pistons?the t belt broke and destroyd the og head.will this create any problems?:hellyeah:

Yes you can, and yes it can. If you're on a budget throw a reman head on there and drive it till you see more problems, but you probably will see those problems and then you'll wish you had done it right the first time.

I've seen engines with valve dimples in the piston crowns run for long periods of time with no issues.

You should at least pull the oil pan and push the pistons up through while the head's off to see if the ring lands are still intact and search for other cracks or issues that may cause the engine to be unreliable in the future.

I wonder how many of the people that say you can't do it have actually done it... You most def. can, and still not run into any problems, Guess what, I'm doing it now!!

And when he said dents, I'm sure he meant those tiny little divots..

I was on dsm graveyard not too long ago and they were selling a race bottom end that timing belt broke and left divots, they were selling it with the pistons as is instead of swapping pistons.

dadstsi just make sure you have no sharp edges around the divots, run this engine and see what happens before spending $1,200 on a new bottom end, not everyone has thousands of dollars to toss at 20 year old cars.. If you get a few years out of this bottom end then good, if you have to buy a bottom end or pistons up the road, atleast you got some usage out of this engine before tossing it out because some guys online told you you can't do it.

Inspect the pistons and sand down any sharp edges. Have a shop vac running and sucking up any dust made.

I ran my car for 4 years after that fix.

I would have to agree aon popping the pistons out... besides the cracks.. when the valves met the pistons you mat have pinched a ringland and now the rings will not seal properly or have the movement they need.

if i dont see no cracks on the crowns, and if i dont see any thing wrong on the bottomend,i will cotinue with the head install.and if it fails all the more reason to get a long block. just need to save a little longer! i mean its only a stock head build, so for now that will be good.and if i do decide to replace the pistons, what pistons?and from who?thx guys!
