I have a 97 GST Spyder. The clutch went out on me about a week ago and I have been working on her ever since to get that issue taken care of. Well I finished today at last and took her out for a test drive. For some reason, when I turn left, the driver side driveaxle grinds. I went ahead and lifted the car, took out the wheel and got under there to see what was up, and it turns out that the axle pops out of the transmission. Mind you it only comes out about a half inch or so. Anyhow I proceeded to hamering both sides in and verified while the car was jacked up, that both driveaxles would stay in uppon turning the steering wheel both right and left. I took her out for test drive n2 and again the same thing, jacked up the car, and bam! The driveaxle is out again...about the same distance as before...is there anything that I am doing wrong, or should be doing? I dont understand why it keeps just popping out, as I am assuming it should not...any help is appreciated, thank you!!!

when you removed the axles is it possible the axle snap ring broke or fell off.it is supposed to be on the very tip of the shaft that goes into the tranny

Agreed! At the end of the axle there is an IMPORTANT ring that looks useless. It is there to prevent the axle from popping out. Same thing happend on my civic! The ring came out. I thought it was nothing and set it aside. Dropped the car and car didn't move.
How I solve it was use a needle nose plier and squeeze it to the point where you can slip onto the end where the ring suppose to sit and then install and hope it don't come out again!

hey guys, thank you for the info, but i actually got an update!

so now my driveshaft is not popping out at all anymore. the problem is another.

i have sparks coming out from the bottom right side. i went under and the drive shaft seems fine, it doesnt seem to be rubbing off on anything.
something is still making a griding noise but its definitately not from where the driveaxle joins the tranny. also it only does it when i accelerate.
any suggestions?

yes sir, all 4 bolts are there as tight as i could get them without breaking them. The sparsks can be seen right through the hole where the fog light should be --- to give you an idea of where they seem to come from. do you think the driveshaft it self may be bent perhaps?

so its your drive shaft or is it your drive axle. I'm assuming its your drive axle since you got a gst.
