Well i was quoted $400 labor + parts by a reputable shop here, who did my timing & seals etc back at 90k miles.
Well I want to attempt this myself & i am going to be doing it on a limited budget.
I have a few questions for some of you who have successfully been able to complete the job.
My car is a 95 GST w/ 147K miles and recently it broke the timing belt or the tensioner let go. I will know once its on jack stands & i lower the motor & remove the case. As of now its been 2 weeks w/ no leaks from the timing cover area so i dont think i spun a bearing in the b/s. It was making a funny sound for a while before this but i couldnt track it down. I checked my hb/cp but it was in great condition. I took the upper timing cover off and it looked tight and again in the morning and all was the same, so i drove it easy because thats the only driving car i own
(projects) And months and k's of miles later it just went on me. I knew something was coming... So now she sits and i want to get it road worthy again.
I am going with mits tensioner, balancer tensioner pulley, timing belt tensioner pulley, timing belt idler pulley. I need a new w/p as well as oil pump & maybe oil case im sure.
I was in Extreme PSI's site looking at the timing components section and saw this:EXTREME PSI : Your #1 Source for In Stock Performance Parts - OEM Front Case Castle Plug: Mitsubishi Eclipse 90-99
Its a front case castle nut and o ring. Is this a required piece while im in there swapping in new stuff? Where does it go anyhow? I dont recall seeing this in any of the threads ive read.
As for the Balance Shaft Im still undecided as to get the BSE kit or replace the B/S bearing and belt and keep it.
I was planning on dropping the oil pan and checking for crank play at this time as well.
Should i replace the bearings while im in there? Why would i or should i change them? Same with the thrust bearings? IDK what to do & i want to keep this thing running for a long time. Help Guys!?!
I can tell this is gonna be a long thread with some great information for everyone interested in doing it themselves

I have to finish my 01 turbo mustang gt. Has a built/stroked 4.6L to 5.0L w/ forged internals, cnc'd stg 2 h/c's, Trick Flow Intake Manifold, soon to have an on3performance 70mm turbo kit w/ FMIC and lots of supporting goodies. That was my project car & now it will be my DD after i get the heads rebuilt on that. Money money money. Its cheaper to finish the stang at this point and then i can slowly fully rebuild the mitsu. I'll be content w/ a low 12 second 2.0L pump gas car, which isnt too hard these days all it takes is money
