Hi everyone , I have been a member for a while but I just bought a car and this is my first post so that makes me a newby .Well today I bought the yellow 96 Gsx that is on ebay . I've wanted one for a while so this morning me and my son took a 2 1/2 hr ride to go look at the new toy . Some things were good some were bad but low mile (67,000) gsxs are getting hard to find . So we take it for a ride ,oh my god ! fastest car I've ever driven . Car was boostin 20 lbs with a 16 g turbo . At this point I'm starting to like this car but i'm still a little weiry . Car idles rough from the cams and check engine light is on so it probably won't pass NYS emmissions . So what do I do ,buy it ,talked the dealer down from 7,000 to $ 5,700 and off we went . For the first hour car ran pretty good , then it got ugly . car started running bad ,seemed like it was loading up , fumes were strong , ran for about 5 more minutes then it went bang ....bang ,and the car shut down . My son was behind me he said it flamed out the exhaust when it went bang . So I'm in the pooring rain on the side of the thruway waiting for a flatbed to take away my new car .Wow . Bad day . I hope this isn't a sign of things to come . Boy car is fast though ,was .. I'm outta my league , I don't know anything about these turbo cars . Live and learn i guess . Thanks for listening . i know how it feels, it sucks i know. i had a similar situation. i got a 95 eagle talon and it spun a rod bearig on my way home. still drivable but just enuff to get it to the shop with a loud, KNOCK, KNOCK KNOCK, KNOCK!!! and you could hear it as you reved the engine, it was horrible. i was pissed too.:banghead:

It never stoped me tho, i just parted it out and got a GSX. best thing i ever did, even tho these cars are famous for giving people grief. i still love my gsx and im sure you will too.

Sorry to hear about that. Was the car "As-Is" when you bought it? If it was, then you are prob SOL unless you can call Lemon Law on it. So you didn't do a car fax report on it, get the CEL checked out for the problem? How long was your test drive and YOU did drive it correct?
 
Could be as simple as a fuel system / ECU malfunction or as complicated as a broken timing belt.

I'm curious to hear the outcome.

If it was, then you are prob SOL unless you can call Lemon Law on it.
Reason #1 I'd never buy a YELLOW car!
 
I had over an hour on it , car ran great . It was an as is sale but I told the dealer I had a bad feeling and I wanted a guarantee I was gonna get it home . He agreed . Dealer is sending a flat bed to pick it up , he said he'll fix and deliver to my house next week . So far he is being good about it .Cost me $100 bucks for the toe ,probably won't get that back . I guess we'll see . Bummer though , I hope it works out . Thanks , Kurt
 
When i got my TSi from the dealer, the turbo took a dump within a month or so. I went back, and the guy laughed and actually said "wow that lasted longer than we all bet on!"

i could of punch a hole through the back of his head...

...then Jus141 came to the rescue! LOL

Dealers not gonna want to give my money back .I'll take the car fixed i've been looking for a GSX for a while . I hope I don't regret it . Car is gonna be a weekend driver . I had planned on working on it I'm just off to a bad start .Thanks, Kurt
 
I'm sure when you get it back fixed, you'll be happy with it. DSM's are awesome cars to drive even if they give a lot of grief.

20lbs of boost and a 16g, eh? Nice platform to begin with. Make sure all your supporting mods are in place to avoid getting stuck on the side of the road again.

2 hour drive from and you pushed it to 20lbs within the 1st hour from a used car dealership? You wouldn't know if the previous owner removed supporting mods before giving in the car or if it had any supporting mods.

Post up the Ebay link you bought it from to see if we could POSSIBLY give you some clues to what went wrong.

That's about all the dealer could tell me , and he said it has race cams so it idles rough . I don't know if anything has been done to the fuel pump ,injectors ,or how the car is being tuned . Nobody around works on these cars and I'm a plumber . And I'm confused . I can understand the old school 350 chevy but this is different . I don't even know what to look for . Car was unbeleivably fast though . I was just cruising down the thruway at about 60 when it blew . I wasn't boostin hard or anything . Thanks ,Kurt
 
Maybe the cam gears slipped and threw your cam timing way off. It would explain the flames out the rear.

Have you checked under the upper timing cover to see if the belt is broken or if the timing is correct? 60k is the service limit for the Tbelt and people forget this important part when modding their car. Very common...

Edit: Awww shit, I see Justin already mentioned the Tbelt.
 
When I took it for the first test ride I stuffed it to the floor like two or three times .I just wanted to see how fast it was . Boost gauge went right up to 20 . Should I not have done that ? It was actually in the neg on the boost gauge most of the ride down the thruway . Also blow off valve releases to atmosphere . I know most of you guys don't like that . I was just looking for a nice low mile GSX maybe with a couple lite mods . I ended up with a race car . Thanks , Kurt
 
Dealer has no more info ,previous owner did not build the car . I don't know what is tuning it . Not sure at Idle ,but doing 60 in 5th gear about 2600 rpms car was 5 lbs in the negative , when I let of gas it would go down to 10 , when I gave it a little gas around 3000 rpms car would run +5 psi on the boost gauge .That is all I was doing when it blew . I didn't race the Corvette that went buy as the car was dieing . HA , HA . Thanks , Kurt

Check Engine light was on said it had a misfire and needed a purge valve if this means anything .Also has a little like k&n filter hanging down ( about golf ball size or so )behind pass door on the end of like a vaccume line maybe , anyone know is that normal ? Thanks
