My 420 has nothing but bolt ons and im considering cams but i really dont know much at all about them. I dont want my car to sound horrible or like a nova, and i dont want to go throw something in thatll blow my stock setup. Any advice? also im changing my oil this afternoon, any oil suggestions? I need high milage oil but i hear synthetic tears your seals to hell.

Well, for cams you might be on a wild goose chase. Crane no longer exists, and crower has been out of cores for quite some time now. Your best bet is to get your hand on a set of used ones if possible. Now, they offer a few stages, the NA cam and the turbo cam. If you dont plan on boosting your car make sure to not get the turbo cam duration.

Also, i think its a great idea to get a set of aftermarket springs and retainers. If it was a 4g63 id say stockers are fine for a mild cam selection, but the 420a i would be weary of using stock valvetrain.

As far as oil, 10w30 castrol GTX would do just fine. If you really wanted a great oil for fair price, i would suggest the brad penn oil, this is what we use and stock it by the cases. Its a semi synthetic and has a high zinc content for great wear protection. Get ahold of me if its something youre interested in. :thumb:

I did a quick search for using the keywords "420A cams" and found this so maybe it will help.

As far as it sounding like a Nova... Nah, I don't think so. No matter what you do to it, cams or no cams, it won't sound like a V8.;)

If your lazy and don't like to change your oil regularly then I say go with the synthetic because it is going to last longer and resist breaking down more than the regular oil. As far as a synthetic oil tearing your seals.... I wouldn't believe that one. But if you go no longer than 3k between oil changes a non-synthetic oil should be just fine.

Hope this helps answer some questions.

Synthetic oil doesn't tear your seals at all. Do you think every nascar team would use it if it did? Not to mention all the cars nowadays that come straight from the factory with mobil 1 fully synthetic. I don't think they would do that if it tore up seals. The only reason it may leak if you switch to synthetic is because the molecules are smaller and are capable of finding smaller holes to leak through. If it does leak you should fix the problem anyways, because eventually the hole will be big enough for regular oil to get through. By the way, high mileage oil is a scam, just go with synthetic.

Yea i would be switching to synthetic so i dont in particularly want to run out and destroy my seals. and as for the cams the crower 2's seem good, i would just like more variety than just running out and jumping on the first cam i see.

And yes i would be interested if i diddnt need the change urgently as i seem to be burning oil and need a change as is. Will slick 50 help the burning?

If you are burning oil I would say it's a little too late to worry about what kind of oil to use or what would be a better oil or what kind of cams to use.:ohdamn:
You can try some kind of engine restore or some other oil additive that's thick as hell to try to stop some of your oil burning issues, but if it's been that long since you changed the oil last and you are burning oil you might have bigger problems.

welli bought the car, put 1300 miles on it and its not burning at a rapid rate or anything, just slightly. its not like black or anything, i just know the people who had this car before me treated it like sh*t and more than likely diddnt change the oil regularly. However it has 167k on it and it still runs strong as hell. Sorry if i seem ignorant, im just an 18 year old with a first car. :]
