new project (1g tsi awd auto)

so my next door neighbor saw my 2g and was impressed that i knew alot about it so he told me about his friend that had a 1g that he didn't want anymore. i went over and took a look at it and asked how much he wanted for it. he said the most magical thing i have ever heard. "You can just have it for free"
So i got a FREE 1993 eagle talon tsi AWD automatic
the only draw back is that the engine is bad. he doesn't know what is wrong with it. he said the previous owners were driving it and started to hear a clunking sound and about 10 miles later the engine blew. they said they saw a piece of metal come out the engine but i haven't seen any external damage. so hopefully its nothing major.
i wanted to post a thread of the car until it gets running. ill update it as it goes. here are some pics of the car.
the cool thing about it is that its a hardtop. i haven't seen any around so maybe its a little more rare then i thought.
let me know what you all think

so i finally got the engine pulled and i was looking it over (just the out side) from top to bottom. and was noticing that from the outside it looks really clean no external damage that i could see..... until i got to the bottom end...
as you can see the valve cover is in good condition. the previous owner said he thought he saw metal fly out the hood but there isn't any cracks or damage to the top.
now the bottom is a different story. look at the oil pan its dented out so obviously its internal. and check out that awsome whole in the pan, i wonder if that is bad...... haha
just wanted to give an update.
anyone happen to know where i can get a short block? or how much they cost to get?
much appreciated

Ohhh owch, I would just go with a longblock and an end clutch kit and see if anything else breaks on it for a few thousand miles.
Going to need a new oil pan too =P

Damn nice luck on getting a free 1g. Nice tan interior as well, pretty rare on 1g's.
Good luck with the project.

so i opened up the valve cover and to my surprise it seems to be in perfect working condition!!!
i opened up the oil pan and to my dismay things aren't good.
it seems that the car has a blown head gasket and who ever had it before me shot a piston. so i got a picture of the top half of the engine (cams and such) and i got a picture of what i found in the oil pan. i need to separate the head from the block to see if there is any damage to the block itself. i hope not cause it seems that the piston broke at the lever where it connects to the crank.
i hope i got all my info written correctly.

so i separated the head and block yesterday and good new the head is in fact in perfect condition. i pulled the broken pistons and the block appears in great condition as well. no damage to the piston cylinders that i can see or feel.
the crank is bad but thats not a very big deal.
now the 2 pistons that are broken are completely destroyed.
from the damage on the pistons and no damage to the block shows how amazing these engines really are. most other blocks would be completely toast

I'm just glad the piston shafts aren't bent........
