So i bought a super clean 100% 2nd owner stock 96 AWD TSI for $800. It is an automatic, which isn't working right. It will move in reverse if you rev it up enough. In Drive it feels like neutral. I can get it to creep every once and a while. I have no odea what this is. Should i look for a new tranny or rebuild the one in it. The tranny fluid also smells burnt.

you could try to drain all the trans fluid fill it back up run for 10 mins and repeat till the fluid is all red and that mite work. It will take like five times. I did that with a mustang I had that I thought the trans was shot. And It ran like a brand new trans

1. Torque convertor is slipping. Warm the car up and check the tranny fluid level. If low restore it to proper spec. This is the cause of most slippage problems.

2. Clogged tranny filter. If you do find that the fluid is low, probably is a good time for a flush and fill with a new filter and gasket. This can be done at home but it is relatively inexpensive to do at Jiffy Lube.

3. The fluid pump is broke. Usually happens from improper lineup of the torque convertor on the input shaft. Requires a rebuild. Not likely unless you just removed the TC.

I can't think of much else that causes TC slippage. Most other auto problems involve shifting between planetaries.

wether it need a new tranny or not, for that price you cant go wrong, think it was a pretty good buy knowing the previous owner sold it cause he knew the tranny was short.

Yeah i feel like a thief, he is letting me do payments of whatever i can afford. Super nice guy. His dad was pressuring him to get it off the property. So back to business i drained all the fluids. The tranny fluid smelt like balls and was brown. No metal though. Oil looked like crap, and i flushed the coolant. New fluids, fuel filter, wires, plugs, and new trans filter coming soon. Hope thats enough to get this thing rolling.
