so my clutch went on my 92 laser awd. this led to me deciding to pull the engine while i was pulling the trans and basically clean some stuff up make sure everything is tip top. not really planning on upgrading or replacing anything unless necessary. question is, while the engine is out, what should i get done as far as machine work or anything of the sort. i figure while its out i might as well get some work done so i don't have to worry about it later. im getting the block hot bathed, as well as the head at least cleaned and obviously replacing all necessary gaskets. i was thinking valve job as well. any help is much appreciated

I would replace the water pump for sure. Probably the oil pump too. New pistons and rings. Keep it all oem/stock. If you measure the cylinder diameter and it is still within specs you can do a light cross hatch hone to help the new rings seat. I would also replace the main bearings and the rod bearings. Have the rods reconditioned. New timing belt kit with pulleys and tensioner. All this should cost under a grand. I remember the days I would pull a motor, slap new rings in it, just to have the oil pump go out a month later.
We talk about pulling motors like it is as easy as pie, but we know it is damn hard work and the 4G63 only goes in one way.
