My current 420a motor on my 97 talon is dead, and I've read all the stuff saying how it isn't worth swapping a 4g63 in. But it's really my only option. I can get either a 4g63 n/t with harness and ecu and everything included, but I don't know if it will fit the transmission and stuff. Is the transmission the same or completely different? And I also have an option of getting a 4g63t with tranny, harness, ecu, starter, turbo, sensors, EVERYTHING, would my only issue then become AWD conversion or is it still a ridiculous swap?

I know this has been beaten to death but I would really appreciate any help on this.

It has been beaten to death. It isn't a good idea and it is way more work than it is worth. The transmissions are entirely different (don't even face the same direction) and the car itself is different in the engine bay. It would be the same amount of work to swap in a Toyota motor or anything else because the cars are only related in the exterior and interior styling, mechanically they are not even the same manufacturer.

It's really that different? Even with a full 4g63t engine + tranny plus everything it's that much work? Are the motor mounts in completely different places?

Yes, it is completely different. They are not even similar under the hood, the motor and tranny mounts are entirely in the wrong places and IIRC the unibody is different to accommodate the different configurations.

Yep, completely different chassis build styles - one for the 420A motor and the other one for the 4G63T.

Head out to a yard and find a 420A motor out of a NEON with its back in all smashed in .. same motor ..

its not worth it the motor mounts wouldnt even be close the 4g63 trannys axel out puts are on the wrong side for that swap and i dont know if the 420a tranny would fit id imagine not sence crysler made the 420a and mitsubishi made the 4g63. ITS NOT WORTH IT. DO NOT DO IT.

They are right. I have a eclipse gs as well and i wanted to do the same thing. Basically the 4g63 and the 420a engines and engine bays in the cars are completely mirrored from one another. take a look at some of the pictures on this forum between the 420a and the 4g63. You'll find you have a lot of work ahead of you. I just rebuilt my engine and transmission in my eclipse gs and is now able to handle 500hp as a safe daily driver. But i dont drive it since i got my gsx now. :D So i gotta still sell the gs. Anyways don't swap its going to be a head ache. Rebuild the 420a.

For what you would spend on the 4g63 swap you could build a 420 that would lay down punishment to nearly everything that rolled up on you. Don't know how it is in Canada but 420s are easy to come by here.

why don't you just build a bulletproof 420a? those things are badass and harder to come across.

Have you not seen under the hood to see how much different the 4g63 powered car is from the 420a car? I'd say it's basically a different car with the same body and interior. Look where the ECU is even -- Chrysler ECU under the hood on the 420A car, Mitsu ECU behind the radio on the 4G63 car.

Buy a different car if you want a 4g63.

If you know someone that has a turbo Talon or Eclipse have them pull up next to you and pop the hood. You will see the diffrences real quick. Just go find a 420 and drop it in, it will save you the hassel in the long run.

I'm having a hell of a tough time finding a 420a, that's the problem. My mechanic looked into it, only one he found he told me had 190 000km and cost 1100$. That was for engine only. I guess I'll just have to keep looking. The reason I was asking for the 4g63 was because I can get the 4g63 for 650$, if the swap was possible would have been the most cost effective solution, rather than take the motor apart and have it re-machined and everything. Guess I'll keep looking for a new 420a. Anyone have an idea how much a rebuild on one of those usually costs? Thanks guys.

Alright. I know how difficult it is to figure out what is the very best rout to take for a upgrade path since you want to do it right the first time. So with me still owning a 1998 eclipse gs as well, i have been down the whole upgrade path for the 420a. Honestly check out what other people have done to there engines and what numbers they are pulling with what mods. This should give you a general idea on what you need to make your goals. What i did was i followed the Hahnracecraft eclipse rs that they built up with very little engine mods and has been holding up as a daily driver. Check them out Home I believe they have the fastst rs to date still. (Well they did a few years back, not sure if it still is). They are pricey for there kits they have but it will giv you a idea on what you need to build your own. I could write it out on what thy did in what steps but they all ready have it posted on there site, so check em out. If you still are pondering after that give me a pm and i can help you out some more. Just rebuild the engine you have, don't try to swap with a 4G63 your car will look like a cheese grater when your finished.
