auto-no 3rd or reverse

All of a suden my tranny wont shift into 3rd and when I put it in reverse, it just revs. Sometimes it will start out in 1st and then shift to 2nd, and sometimes it just starts out in 2nd. I dont think its limp mods since I get 1st gear sometimes. Any ideas?

Do you tend to drop the tranny into drive from neutral with the motor revved at all? If so I would suggest end clutches, they are a simple and cheap fix.

it could be a number of things, first thing is fluid as said above, check your linkage as well, then go from there. End clucthes are cheap and easy to replace (guides all over the net) then you get into other parts, TQ Converter, pump, valve body etc... start simple.

Agreed but people do it and so I ask the question. Really it isn't terrible on these cars because it mostly toasts the end clutches which are an easy repair.

Also do you ever launch it by revving while holding the brake? This will also shorten end clutch life.

Brake boosting can bend the end clutches as I understand it too.

fluid level is fine. And I dont nuetral drop it. I got a rebuild kit just waiting to be put in. Hopefully that will take care of everything

Make sure you smell your ATF too to make sure it doesn't smell burnt.

Hmmm, sounds very familiar....i just went through that 3-4 months ago. The car, would only engage into 1st and 2nd, if i accelerated to redline on 2nd, it would go into neutral, even while engine revved freely in neutral. And reverse just wouldn't engage unless it was on start up and reverse was engaged before "D"(drive). I searched and searched and read and read. Then i thought to myself, do some basic maint. on the trans, like ATF and A/T filter change ($30 in parts/fluid and a little elbow grease). "BAM!" the car was back on the road cruising like new. Do that first before getting too messy in rebuilds/costs.

that's interesting, so it happened after you changed the A/T filter and fluid? Well, maybe your valve body is dirty and needs to be reconditioned(cleaned). There is one last thing that i would do for cheap before spending crazy money on rebuild parts/labor. Research how to remove the valve body, Translab Shift Kit Install Page 1, but instead of doing an upgrade/modification, just clean and recondition all the parts and rinse/re-lubricate when done. Reinstall with new ATF, see if that helps. At least it will only cost you the price of more fluid.

Yea, I will ###### do that then. I used valvoline atf. Not sure wats it called. Its in a red bottle thou.

my car suddenly didnt want to go into reverse when i was leaving a store, had to push it out from the space. then when i went to leave, it had the hardest time shifting to second.
well i took it to a transmission shop and it turns out, reverse, 2nd, and 4th were nowhere to be found :mystery

well i had it rebuilt at that point, $2200 w/ 2 yr warranty
