check engine light not on with motor out

Ok this is a weird question?
I have the head off my car and while it's been off i had dsmlink installed. I wanted to test it and see if i could connect and i can't, got the io connection timed out which can be a million things. But it mentioned to look for the check engine light and see if it goes out after 5 seconds after the key is turned on. Well mine never comes on to start with.
Can anyone tell me if this is due to all the wiring harness being disconnected or do i have an issue with my ECU since dsmlink has been installed? If anyone has their engine out will they see if their CEL comes on? Or has someone noticed before when their engine was out? I will have the motor out until probably April because i'm building it up for the college and i don't want to haveto go ty to start the car and nothing happens and i fail the class (yeah the teacher fails us if our motor doesn't start and run for 2 hours between 2000 and 3500 rpms) because my ECU is messed up. Sorry about the long post.

Yes, with the engine out a lot of "loop circuitry" isnt' going to have it's "loop"

either that or the bulb is missing

well i'm hoping its the fact that the engine is out and my ECU isn't toast.
