Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this setup or has any advice? I plan on upgrading my turbo but its not in the near future. LOL

PS I'll be using BC 272's

Bad idea.

The cams would move the powerband out of the useful range of a 14B for a street car. This may be something you'd want to consider if you're pushing the 14B to it's limit at the drag races.....but there are 128,572 other (cheaper) mods you can do that will yeild more performance than big, lumpy cams on a 14B-powered car.

I think most people just want a lopy idle from the bigger cams(hell, including me).. I plan on doing a 16g 264/264 setup, so hopefully ill remember this thread, and reply back.

On a side note, since noone (so far) has cams with a 14b what about cams and a 16g?

I think most people buy cams because its an instant 20-50hp. If all you want is a lopy idle unplug your maf, and have the car run like crap. Dont go ricer on us, by chasing after sounds. You want power.

Don't get the cams yet until you upgrade your turbo. For now keep it the way it is, and as mentioned look for other ways to max out your 14b.

I'm not chasing a sound or anything like that. I'm looking for horsepower and a way to make this work. Anyone care to explain a little more on why this is a bad idea? thanks everyone so far on your input.

It is a bad idea cause your turbo would give out pretty fast and fall on its face up top. In other words you would be inducing and expelling more air than your 14b can handle.

A bigger turbo would be a better choice for the money, unless you're really in love with a 14B for some reason.

Don't think cams magically unlock horsepower, and don't assume that "bigger is better" when it comes to cam selection. HKS 264's have allowed a 16G-powered 1G to run a 10.33. http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/drag-strip/262203-new-evo-iii-16g-record-et-no-no2.html

I have ran a pair of BC 272 in a 14b powered DSM. The boost controller was set to around 25 PSI which on the stock 94 manual transmission cams, was peaking 23 PSI at around 5000 RPM's and slowly dropped to 17 PSI at 7000 RPM's. The car was given a new 14b (because the old one destroyed itself) with the 272 cams the car had a little more lag and less power when not running boost, but when when the car was into higher RPM's it was noticeably faster. The turbo now would peak 19 PSI at around 4800 RPM's and the boost would drop down to 12 PSI at 7000 RPM's. We were running DSMap and after the cams were installed we had to completely re-tune the V.E. of the engine. The cams allowed the engine itself to flow much more CFM's then the compressor would allow. The engine which was running stock rods and pistons was destroyed before we could take it to a dyno.

We were running.

255 LPH Walbro

1000cc FIC injectors

Very Mildly ported head

3 inch intake

2.5 inch O2 housing

3 inch downpipe dumping

Stock intake and exhaust manifolds

DSMap

Stock intercooler

2.5 charge pipes.

i would upgrade to a 16g before putting them cams in. I ran the cams with a 14b and it just felt sluggish. Once i upgraded the turbo to a b16g i felt a lot more power gain out of the car and pulled much harder at about 4200rpm's with the cams in and the 16g. I also ran the 16g without cams at first since i ended up removing them with the 14b still on the car, so i can definably tell you i noticed a big different with cams with a 16g but a lost of power almost with the 14b and cams.

A bigger turbo would give you more torque and horsepower than a cam upgrade on 14b. But yes, if its tuned properly, the cams will increase topend on the 14b, but not the direction I would go. Cars have gone pretty fast on stock cams as well.

I'm planning on running some 272's with my 14b this year to see if I can get closer to an 11.

I would make sure your combination is maxed out before running the cams though. Follow the tried and true DSM modification step and then roll through the cams.

black92 tsi awd- I'm very impressed with your 1/4 time with the 14b! Thats on 20psi? Anyone who can run low 12s on a 14b is really taking advantage of their setup

Yeah that was on 20 psi and on the brakes. I was in a bracket race and tapped the brakes trying not to break out.

Ran a 12.41 a couple weeks later with the rr caliper locking up somewhere on the run....rough end of the year!

I will be running 272's on a 14B come spring. But I will have all of the supporting mods to run the 272's. My build just left me with no money to upgrade the turbo at this time.
