FOR THOSE WHO DONT WANNA READ MY SHORT STORY: Im backfiring at 5k around 12-13 psi, can bad or old plug wires hurt you in upper RPM's and cause you to run rich? (My bumper is sooty black above the muffler)

I thought it was a fuel cut issue, but I have been down that road and I have no boost leaks anymore, an unhacked maf, and really no mods at all that would matter besides a 14b with 16g hotside and 3" inch exhaust with no cat. Thinking Im rich due to bad MPG and my bumper being pitch black about my muffler.

I get this backfire at about 5K (of course) at about 12-13 psi and its not as violent as fuel cut, just enough to make you take your foot off the gas and look like an idiot.

I dont have any fuel leaks I can tell of, my pump is rewired, Ive got my plugs gapped at .028 and have switched back and forth between the 6ES and the 7ES with no difference. Only thing I can think of is my plug wires are pretty old and the boot on #4 is all ripped and trashed, but I know for a fact its making contact with the plug and the wire isnt ripped. All my plugs look great with a nice tan coloring to them.

I dont know what the hell is the problem, Ive been reading up a lot on plug wires lately and how they crap out at around 5K, can bad plug wires be enough to cause this? Only other thing I can lean to checking is the coilpack or transistor?

I have no logging device, and I cant really work on the car since I just got surgery on my wrist, just looking for somewhere to start when I can. Thanks.

Start with a logger.

Since you insist there's no boost leaks, we can't offer any valid advice until we know what your timing's doing, as well as your o2 readings.

From my experience with faulty plug wires in the past, they seem to cause misfires more frequently at low RPM and under light throttle load than under hard acceleration.

Damnit. Alright, I agree, without a logger I cant help you help me. :D Im really due for one, and they are cheap enough, I see them on ebay all the timefor 1G's, like $100 shipped with everything.

i had the same problem in my car and it turned out to just be plugs and wires because its turbo make sure u use ngk plugs and wires(they make special wires for turbo apps) and that fixed it on my car. what happens is with that wire on #4 it will make contact with the plug but it will also arc out the sides and contact with the wells at high rpms mine was the same way on the same cylinder try it out and let me know how it goes

Right on. Im runing NGK plugs and have run NGK wires on preivous vehicles, but Im going to try the Accel 300 series this time. They have super low resistance and are 8.3mm compared to the 7mm of the premium NGK's. And they are the same price from Summit Racing.

I've had these wires for 2 years, and they are still good.
