i have just bought a 92 tsi auto for my gf, the things a turd, NO POWER ATALL, i have never driven or even really looked at a turbo car much, at idle the boost sits at -7, when revved it goes up to 7psi pretty quick, but smokes like crazy from the turbo area, the exhaust is like grayish white. i have read a few forums, sounds to me like a blown turbo, but i dont know, advice???????

Blown turbo or blown head gasket...

First, check the turbo for shaft play:

Take off the intake pipe, and GENTLY wiggle the shaft of the turbo from side to side, up and down, and in and out. It should move BARELY at all or be completely stationary. DO NOT TRY TO WIGGLE IT TOO HARD. Many people create their own shaft-play by trying to look to hard.

Then, do a compression test.

Report back :)

i was planning on doin a compression test, but its not overheating which made me think that it wouldnt be a blown headgasket, the coolant light is also on, which just confused me more, the abs light is on too, but im sure thats unrelated

OH. if both of those lights are on, it can also be out of juice. This happened to me as well, it was a bad alternator. Check it out... check the voltage across the battery off and then on as well... Should be 12 off, then 14-15 on.

Remember that the auto 1g only has a 13b in it.Not like the 1g 5 speeds where they have the 14g.So there would be a difference in power. But it sounds like your talking large amounts.
.Check the turbo for shaft play. Also run a compression test.Even if there is shaft play and the turbo's done for Still do a compression test.Make sure the rings and all are good.
If chance the cylinder compression is low in one or more pour a small amount of engine oil into the cylinders through the spark plug hole and re-test compression.
If adding the oil helps compression, piston rings may be worn or damaged.
This is basic maintenance on these cars. Also may want to do a boost leak test.Even if you fix your smoke problem these steps should be taking to avoid all future issues.
Good luck

Don't pay attention to the in-dash boost gauge....it's horribly inaccurate. It would be like looking at the gas gauge to check your tire pressure.

Sounds like a turbo with a leaking turbine seal to me. A great time to upgrade the tiny 13G to a 14B or 16G, along with a 2G manifold and o2 housing. All can be had for under $300 used depending on which route you choose.

checked the coolant lines, seemed ok, good on coolant, havent done a compression check yet, the turbo has shaftplay and some nasty lookin brownish oil in it, again, i know nothing about turbos

I blew my old 14b up and I started smoking white reallllllllly bad like it was a headgasket, but I came to find out that the turbo was just pushing coolant through the turbo and out the exhaust causing the smoke. Also depending on how much oil/coolant you dumped into your exhaust it will still smoke for a little till it all burns out of it, and you should also take your ic piping off and the smic and dump/clean out all the oil that ends up going into them when turbos usually blow. Hopefully its just the turbo and you don't need to pull the motor apart, good luck

Are you sure about that?

I've been rebuilding turbos over 5 years now, and out of the hundreds I've rebuilt I've yet to see one burn coolant. It's virtually impossible by the design of the center housing, unless the housing were to somehow get cracked.

I'm thinking your turbo was burning oil.
