hey guys jsut wondering i have a 95 eclipse GS. When the car is just running in neutral and clutch is out, there is a rattly sort of grind coming from the tranny. When i depress the clutch, the noise vanishes. This makes me think its the throwout gear/bearing? could it be a input shaft.

Also another question, i was wondering with my civic ive been been finding sptos at rpms in all gears to where i dont need to use the clutch. i wasnt paying attention one day and in first gear at about 3000 rpms i accidentally snapped into neutral and there was no grind and at about 2200 rpms i tried puting it into 2nd without clutch and it slid in perfectly??? Can i keep shifting liek this? So far i can just use my clutch to get moving and there rest there is syncro-shifting.. is this good? bad?

ps. never done that with the eclipse that has problems.

Throw out bearing is what I would put my money on. Does it get louder/faster when you increase the RPM's while its in neutral?

Yeah you can shift without a clutch by 'rev matching'. Whenever the two shafts are spinning at the same speed it will slide into gear. You can do it, but I probably wouldn't too much. It's just a civic so a new tranny cant be any more than a couple bucks.

Thats the weird thing about it. It sounds like a drum brake when spun thats too tight, it will grind grind grind. When i rev the car up in neutral it will disappear which makes the problem seem really weird. It will idle and sound rattly but when revved it will stop. it wont get louder, it will stop.
idk maybe it does still make noise, its jsut too faint to hear it over the sound of my exhaust and stuff.
Any other suggestions or should i still go for a T.O.B?

My '97 Eclipse GS does the same thing....but only when it's cold out (under 50*f), and only from a cold startup.

I bought the car in 2001 with 87k on it, and it's done it every winter since then. It hasn't gotten any worse, nor has it improved. I normally rest my foot on the pedal a little while the engine's warming up to keep the noise at bay.

I'm banking on a dry throwout bearing. When / if the clutch gets replaced, I'll know for sure.

I didnt even think about that. The noise started about 2 weeks ago. Guess what happened in Michigan 2 weeks ago...temperature dropped to about 38 degrees...Thats makes sense...but why? And for me, after i warm up the car for a while and start it up warm..it has the same sound. Thats weirdd..My uncle sad there was probably like build up from like dew and frozen water that may be on the t.o bearing but i doubt he is right. I jsut wanna know because this noise doesnt go away even if the car is warmed up or not. Thanks!!!!

My friend drives a semi, and he shifts like that, they call it meshing, I wouldn't recommend doing it, a semi trans is a little more beefer.

Meshing comes with lots of seat time in any particular vehicle, as well as a tranny that shifts like butter.

I can literally get my GS moving with the clutch, and run the gears from 1st to 5th without ever putting my foot on the clutch. I just know the exact RPM the engine needs to be to get into certain gears at certain speeds....it's my daily driver, so lots of seat time has granted me this ability. That, along with a smooth tranny.

went to change tranny fluid and it was mush!! chunks and ooze. I jsut did a full tranny flush and i guess the tranny lube i put in it reacted with a little bit of the old stuff and had a really bad reaction. Dropped tranny, everything was still beatiful..stage 2 clutch, plate, and super-light flywheel all great. T.O bearing was very dry like gasping for some lube. So i just cleaned it and then put new gear oil/tranny fluid. Ummm, watch out when it says "do not mix this with any other tranny fluid" I got smoked :(.
Also same thing happened to radiator. There was green dextron in there when i bought it. My oil change place put the orange shit in there and that also was all chunked up and coagulated when i flushed it. jesus, dont mix fluids!!!

Why the HELL would they have put orange coolant in a car that doesn't call for it?!?

I HATE these quick-change places that only carry one type of motor oil and one type of coolant in bulk. It doesn't matter what car you drive in there or what oil it specifies....you get 5W30. That's bullsh!t....especially when our owner's manual says not to use 5W30 unless you live where it never goes above 60*f outside.

I know its 10-minute oil change. They did a good job with brake fluid, PS fluid and oil change part. but when they put radiator and did a "half-tranny flush" they put the wrong sh** in both of those. The stuff they put in coagulated my new stuff. They didnt even tell me they were topping off my tranny fluid... you dont really top it off do you? I just change all of it when i need to. Yeah but the radiator thing made me experience bad heating problems, thot my heater core went out. Now i know!

Yup that noise is definatley a TOB going bad. (I have the same thing)

When aged, the grease will either leak out or dry up. When this happens, the bearings may not roll like they ought, and will grind or squeal against the race. The noise is most noticeable when it is cold, similar to how brakes may squeal before they are warmed up during the winter.

yeah i had that problem with grinding with the clutch in......but then i had a whole in my tranny and all the fluid was gone :).........but i don't think thats your case
