Hi a few weeks back my timming belt broke do to my altanator belt getting caught up in it so i finly got around to getting another belt on it and i think i got all the timming marks lined up right and when i try to start it it just turns and turns and backfires some so dose this mean

A. my valuves are done for? or
B. i got the exchust storke and compresson stroke backwords?
C. Nove of the above

how did you get your alternator belt caught in your timing belt?

either way, if your timing belt did snap you more than likely bent some valves....take the head off and take it to a machine shop to inspect if you don't know what to look for.

Isnt there a big plastic cover going over your timing belt?? I dont know why the heck that would be off.. but if you were driving and the TB came off thats a 99.9% gaurantee you bent your valves. Take the precautions cali said.

I got a 7bolt motor as well that i had origianl with the car i will probly take the head off it and out it on the 6-bolt which would that work? if not i will have it fixed later

I can guarantee you the valves are bent and you can you use the 6 bolt head, but if your having to ask this question then id say stick w/ your 7bolt head and get it fixed.

1. Take plenty of pictures before you pull the head/Intake off, leave intake bolted to the head when pulling.

2.Check to make sure your cam's aren't gouged too bad, hopefully you should be able to re-use them.

3. Check your crank bolt to make sure it didn't back out and cause your timing belt to slip and your Alt. belt to slip off into it.

4. buy a manual or use VFAQ Site - Visual Frequently Answered Questions.

I got the 6-bolt in the car the 7bolt is out i was going to use a 7bolt head on a 6bolt block. And the alt belt broke and got caught in the timing belt cause i didnt have the timing cover on the car  which the alt belt was the last thing i would have ever thought that would get caught in the timing belt and breaking it. I will probly wait till next summer to put the head its getting to cold to mess with it now. I will just have to drive around my 96 TSI or my gmc jimmy or nissan turck till then. But i was wanting to get the Eclipse gst running so i can sale it to help pay for the TSI i just bought

If the alt belt didnt get it, a rock or other debris would have. Lesson learned, never drive without a timing cover. Its not hard to swap heads and do the timing, just follow the vfaqs.

Fix your head. Fix the valves that got messed up, put it back together with a fresh new timing belt and like mentioned above make sure to run a complete timing cover. Some people take it all off for looks and it is not worth the risk.

This is a old post but i ended up saleing the car above that had the belt break and come to find out not only did it bend 8 values it trashed the motor OMG a dam timming belt cause the values to get bent and when the piston hit the value it pushed it into the piston wall and bent it and leaveing a gash in the wall as well.

Wow i had many other cars in my day but never did i have one to get RAPED just from a timming belt :notgood:

The guy i sold it to called me and told me about it. I sold it as is and told them the values might be bent but never in a million years would i had thought the motor was trashed.
