I generally consider myself a careful driver, but a couple weeks ago I found myself straddled across a small ditch after coming through a fairly sharp turn. The road conditions were wet but my tires were not worn and I was traveling below the speed limit during that stretch of road.

So I have two questions:
-How do I find out what happened? I play it over in my head and I stayed in my lane even after the turn except my car was turned completely sideways, then I drifted off the road (but not across traffic thankfully) and then slid to a stop over the small ditch. I tried to look up some information online but couldn't find a good source.

-I now have a Talon which with lots of rot from too many winters making the repairs too expensive. I know the parts will be valuable to someone and would like to donate/sell them. Any ideas?

Thanks.
Brian

Glad to hear you are ok. If you are interested in selling your car piece by piece (AKA parting it out)? If so, that would definitely be something you can make some money on and it is common practice. Good luck!

AWD or FWD? There was obviously something on the road not allowing traction, like ^ said, black ice, or you just hit a patch of ice and then lost traction on everything else. Please dont say you have an AWD, Ill lose faith.

i had a couple friends same thing each time its always cold always black ice and doesnt matter if your goin the speed limit or not if it gets sideways on ice then your sliding till something stop you, id part the car out at least make some money off it.

I would try and get it all fixed....make it your winter project since the snow will be here soon. This way you have something exciting to do over winter....or if your really desperate for money like ^ said....just part it out and buy what ever car you can with that cash. Which might not be the best car which is why i say your fix it. It will be fun plus worth the money

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the replies. My current story is a large pothole on the edge of the narrow road is what caused the accident. I'm hoping that case will get me out of the careless driving ticket:mad:. Court appearance next week.

Based on the much appreciated suggestions, I will probably "part the car out". My winter project was going to be to replace the engine head gasket (cracked head?) because it was leaking a lot of coolant. My wife and I had ordered a new car and I was taking this leaky car until our new car arrived. Luckily I only had to carpool for a couple of weeks before the new car came in. But the real problem is the rusted underbelly and frame bearing the engine, which the body shop said they could not repair easily due to the rot. Besides, taking the car apart may be just easy enough for this newbie, provided I don't have to put it back together. Sounds like a fun project on its own.

maybe you had fresh tires, the oil residue take 500 miles to take it off.

Thanks for the suggestion, but the tires weren't that new. I will definitely take note when driving my new car though.

Was it cold enough for black ice? Was the road freshly oiled or tar and chipped? Something might have spilled on the road before you went through. Do you travel that road often?

Not cold enough for black ice. There is definitely a pot hole that I now believe to be the culprit. Half the leaves on the wooded narrow winding road had fallen recently so leaves in the road is also a possibility as well. I have been driving the road every day for 3 months. It gets heavy commuter traffic, considering its a narrow and winding road.

:) Don't worry, it was a Front Wheel Drive.

A winter project sounds fun, but I'm dubious about my ability to repair load bearing frame pieces. That being said I'll try to post some pictures of that damage an the forums to see if I can get a better idea from the community if repairing is possible. I and especially my wife (who has been driving the car for 12 years) do really love the car.

Thanks again for all the replies. Drive safely.

My brother ran from a cop on 103. He ran into a ditch and got caught hiding in a parking lot. He had been pulled on 103 a few times actually. He hit two ditches in that area too. Coming down Meadows of Dan from Carroll county one night, I fell asleep while driving late at night, my brother was racing at high rpms down that mountain. Dangerous but hes a good driver when he stays on the road..
