I've searched and searched and can't seem to find a 1g gas tank other than from the dealer, for $958! Does anyone know where I can get a new gas tank other than from the dealer?
The issue I'm having is with rust. I have 100's of hours and several thousand in the current build and the last thing I want is a rusted or slightly rusted gas tank. I've sent it off to have it cleaned and coated but it was only cleaned because there were baffles in the gas tank that supposedly made it unable to coat. After $85 for a good steam cleaning there was some slight rust starting again the next morning.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

You can mount any gas tank, it doesn't have to be the stock. Just do some Googling, you can easily find aftermarket gas tank for the 1g for under $250. A $1000 is insane, you can buy shell for that much.

I have 3 parts cars. I have gas tanks but the 2 fwd's have rusted tanks and the awd won't work. Does anyone know of a place in North Carolina that will clean and coat gas tanks.

Go to a body shop but the best possible place is a powder coat shop. The know how to work metals and they probably even have sandblasting equipment to sandblaster the rust right off. If you want just sand the rust off and primer it.

hmm did you check with advanced auto?? Ive never ask for something for my dsm's and they didn't have it,They might be able to get an aftermarket,If you tried sorry just throwing ideas out there,I just punched it in on yahoo but yet to find 1g tanks..

I've searched all parts stores in this location as well as most online parts stores. I did order a gas tank prep and refinish kit from Summit but it came with a quart of tank coating, not nearly enough. Maybe I'll just get the plasma cutter and cut in straight down the middle, spray some truck bed liner in it and then JB weld the b**** back together.:D
But on a serious note the car has been finished except for the gas tank for around 6 months now. I have to find something soon!!! This purple beater cavalier just ain't cuttin' it anymore. But thanks so far for the advice and ideas. Keep em coming.

When you let a tank sit, there is condensation that builds in the tank. I have pulled both of the fwd tanks and both had rust inside them.

Yeh i know that!! My awd 1g and my brother inlaws 1g awd sat for three years and sat with stale gas in it and his rusted inside,I got a feeling when i go to drain mine imma find a little rust and half to get some of that rust eater stuff and throw it in there to get w.e i can out before i go putting the car back together with new gas haha the tanks in good shape but i aint 100% sure if i'll need to do it yet,But that blows sorry ya had to go that way bro,Kinda sucks for ev1 with a 1g considering at one point we all need to replace these tanks in these cars haha but its all good keep it rocking :rocks: car will be done up driving in no time

1k for a gas tank is pretty outrageous. Id go with a big ole' fuel cell before I'd ever drop money on a tank like that.

Just from my muscle car days, If you sand and primer the tank, go ahead and hit it with some paint. Primer can be a very porous material that can let water seep through. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't, and the primer might hold for years. I have seen too many nice classics turn into rust buckets because of only having a primer on the bare metal.

Talon20g, I was referring to the outside of the tank. I really really hope no one would put anything other than an additive or gas into their fuel tank. Especially not a primer or paint. Interesting liner system, first time I have seen one for the inside of a tank.\

EDIT: Just noticed that the liner was for the outside also, my mistake. How thick does that liner go on, is it compareable to an underside coating?

To be honest with you I haven't tried it because one quarts isn't nearly enough to coat the whole take. On the back of the liner can it says that the one quart is enough to coat a 12 gallon tank. Well the 1g tank has several baffles inside the tank and would make it harder to coat, even with 3 or 4 quarts. I'd rather not spend $100 on tank liner and it possibly not cover the whole inside of the tank. I wish I had a more direct answer to your question but then again if I did I might not have posted in the first place.

Also just emailed Moyer Fuel Tank Renu - antique gas tank repair restoration, classic car gas tanks GASTANK to get a quote. I'll post up more when I find out details and hopefully it can become useful to some others.

I just recieved an email back and the cost will be around $300 for everything. If anyone has any other ideas instead of paying $300 for this please post them up but if not she's getting shipped out next week.
