Edmonton,
Hey Guys!
Well I have finally had it with creep and spike and all those boost issues and I am going to go external on my 16g. I plan to weld the stock one shut on the 16g, and buy a manifold from Turbo XS that bolts right up to my big 16g to go external. Now the only problem I can see is that the manifold is flanged for a 40mm wastegate. Now I am really newbish on the whole wastegate thing, and I know the pros for going external, but what size do I want for a wastegate, and what does the size difference mean? Does it mean more lag? Less boost settings? Very lost on this point. Also WHAT BRAND! I am sick of boost and do not mind spending the money as long as it solves this problem. I have heard very good things about synapse and Tial but give me your opinion. I have a manual boost controller which I can play with the boost now, but it creeps very badly with the internal waste gate. Somebody feel free to educate me on waste gates! Thank you!

I went with a Turbosmart one and been really happy with it. Know a few guys up here who run the Turbosmart WG

Somethings you are going to have to get. Obviously a new manifold, a wastegate, a new 02 housing. That is the minimum. Honestly, what i would get is some type of setup from a vendor that combines everything, so that you know it works, its been test fitted and what not. I personally have a 2G tapped for a 38mm TIAL WG on a 8 pound spring and then a custom tubular 02 housing. Its very nice, works well. I would look into something that slowboy, extremepsi, MAP, or STM may have. Call one of them up and talk. I prefer the TIAL stuff because of the extreme lifespan they have, easy to upgrade the spring, look good, and always work!! :thumb:

Ok, So Slowboy has some nice setups. I have never heard of MAP or STM but yeah. 700 Dollars just for the exhaust mani and the 02 housing. Which actually probably isn't that bad, but why do I need a different 02 housing. Thanks again Guys!

Personally, I'd recommend an o2 housing from index (now also sold by STM) with a Tial wastegate.

As for a wastegate size - you need a bigger wastegate to run lower boost on a big turbo. In other words, for a 16G, you'd be fine with a Tial 38 since you can run different spring pressures on it. If you get a GT40 turbo and want to run 5 psi on it (I'm making this up), you'll need a bigger wastegate like the Tial 50 since the Tial 38 won't be able to keep the wastegate shut even with the highest spring pressure rating. Now if you run the same GT40 turbo at 20 psi, you can get away with a Tial 40 since you are running a higher boost pressure. All numbers above are hypothetical, I used them to provide you with an example.

Ok, so now a new question arises. I have an evo exhaust manifold that is ported, and I now I am in a quandary, do I use the evo manny that is on my car already and then go with the o2 housing for the external waste gate? Is there any advantage/ disadvantage to going with the o2 versus the manifold? The Tial is the one I am going to go with so yeah, that is over and done with, but which way do I go for this and for what reason. Thanks guys.
John

You don't need anyting more than an ebay gate. There are 44mm gats 38mm gates. All work just as good as TiAL. . . It's not like they are difficult to copy. It's not like a copy can't perform just like the original. There's no patent on an external gate so don't let it bother your conscience.

hey man them turbo xs brands are junk don't do it. i have one and it don't fit write.one of the runners hits the head. when i told turbo xs they said i need an addapter. anyways there junk. you can have a 2-g mani taped and a tail 38 bung on there in no time at all. also alot of ppl say go e-bay. thats up to you but controlling boost is critical thing. i don't take chances with stuff like that. i use all turbosmart stuff. and it has proven reliable over and over again.:talon:

Is a 38mm gate okay to use with a H2E @ 22+ psi ?

Hmm... I bought a SSAC Exhaust Manifold and it is quite nice, very heavy, very strong, and my buddy at the machine shop said the welds looked good to him and that he feels it will hold up to the heat and weight of the H2E. I've read people who have had great success with SSAC then again other people who claim SSAC is junk.

well thats it. it looks good and the toughness of it is good. its just the fitment. the plate that connects to the head don't lay flat. and if i put the addapter on then the down pipe is a inch to short. but it s all good cause iam going to hack it up and start to design a bumper mount turbo kit for mistsubishi turbos. the welding classes iam in are going to help out with the hard stuff:talon:

My exhaust manifold flange is flush and fits right to my head. I don't have a T3/T4 turbo yet (waiting for the H2E to arrive) so I'm not sure if it will fit properly or not... but if not no problem because I can easily have it modified to fit properly.

yea i understand that. but i run only mitsu turbos so i don't want to have to modd anything. the only thing you might have to modd is your water pipe. but thats ez i actualy had a A-N fiting welded up so i could run big turbos and not have to worry about fitment there.:thumb:
