Transmission Issue: Flakes in fluid

So I just swapped out the trans. I got this one from a friend, so I know the condition it was in, and it ran fine with about 70K on it. Its been 3 weeks now and it started making whining noises again, so I drained the fluid. It comes out greyish in color and you can see tiny metal flakes in it. WTF happened? It wasnt grinding or popping out of gear, so I dont know how bad it got. Any suggestions?

Thought I should include this info. I filled it up with Valvoline 70 90 synthetic. Could that be my problem?

The whining Sounds like it could be a bearing. You can remove the end cover from the transmission, and check to see if the input shaft, or intermediate shaft have any movement!

Whining usually means you fried the seals in the pump. aka the transmission is dead. it sounds sorta like a supercharger right?

When you put this trans in, did you flush the transmission lines and such from the debris the old trans left behind? If not then you most likely loaded a ton of crud into the unfiltered side of the trans, and clogged up the pump and torched the seals.

If not, then I would say you are a bit low on trans fluid.

darkhorizon, I took it as a 5 speed. not an automatic. The Valvoline 70/90 synthetic gear oil, tells you that.

So I just changed the fluid with coastal 80-90.. still whines like hell and I can hear a noise at idle, goes away when I push the clutch in, so Im guessing it the shaft.

Yep, its one of the input shaft, or intermediate shaft bearings! go ahead and pull the cover and check to see how much, if any play is in the shafts.

What all needs to be removed to pull that cover? If there is any play, is it an easy fix?

This is some pics of an awd, but it will give you some idea. Pull the cover and see if either of the two gears you see here will move around, or in and out.

This is easily done with the trans in the car. Remove the passenger side wheel and the plastic dust shield. After you do this the end cover will be right there.

Remove the trans. Disassemble it, and replace the bearing. You will need a press and gear puller to do this.

I just replaced that whole freaking thing, and I really dont feel like taking it out again. Do you think using a GL5 fluid is what caused this?

No, I've had the same thing happen to me. Its just one of those things. If you know what I mean.

first gear whines the loudest, and its pretty loud. The other gears are barely noticable. Should I not drive it at all like this?

The bearing is not what is whining. It is the offset in the gears from the bad bearing, so I would say no do not drive it like this!
